With the conclusion of the World Cup, many fans believe the USMNT fell short of expectations.
Despite being eliminated by Belgium in the Round of 16, the US team still managed to showcase its players, putting them in strong positions for international transfers to bigger clubs.
Now, that hypothesis has been tested, and the outcome ended with a USMNT player transferring to a team in the English league known as the EFL Championship.
This player has been playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps, but the English club made his arrival official through social media.
Sebastian Berhalter transferred to Middlesbrough
The truth is: after this news was confirmed, everyone was glad that Sebastian Berhalter was transferred to a historic team in England.
However, from a practical standpoint, it made sense for the Whitecaps to transfer the USMNT midfielder now. But we will talk about that in a second.
First, let’s discuss the official details of this transfer deal, shall we?
According to the MLS official website: “The 25-year-old US international departs for a reported $2 million fee. Vancouver retains a sell-on percentage.”
The key detail is that Vancouver retains a sell-on percentage, so if Berhalter is transferred again, the Whitecaps will receive a portion of that future fee.
However, the most important detail of this transfer is this: “He was out of contract following the 2026 season.”
That's exactly why the best decision the Whitecaps could make was to sell him while he still had transfer value.
Had they waited until December, Berhalter could have left the club as a free agent without generating any transfer fee.
From that perspective, the Caps made the right call, especially since the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension. That’s why it was important for the team to make the sale before it was too late.
Berhalter was a crucial part of the starting lineup, yes, but he would have left either way; it is better if that departure leaves money to the institution.
Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC sporting director, said this about the transfer confirmation: “Sebastian joined us at a pivotal stage of his young career, and through his hard work and dedication, he earned every opportunity with both club and country.”
Adding: “We are incredibly proud of what he has accomplished and the role he has played in our success. His journey is another strong example of the pathway we provide for players with the right mentality, discipline, and work ethic to reach the highest level.”
So yes, everyone is excited, but the transfer has to be made now. I don’t believe the Caps would want to retain the USMNT prospect for a few more years.
However, that’s how soccer works when both parties don’t agree on an extension, or one of them doesn’t want to.
