It took me a few days to process the news about Lionel Messi leaving the Argentine national team. During his tenure, he won two Copa Americas, a World Cup, and finished as runner-up in the most recent World Cup against Spain.
Nobody can deny that the end of the GOAT’s story with his country is worth being a movie. Now, the truth is that, even though the soccer world is sad about this news because Messi leaving the sport is closer, Inter Miami fans should be a bit happy when they read this news.
But why is this? Let me explain.
Inter Miami fans should be glad that Lionel Messi is stopping playing for its national team
The first thing is that Messi's focus, from now on, will be on the competitions he plays in with the Herons, since, after this news, he will not be called up for any event with the national team.
And that’s the other thing: during the FIFA international window with some friendly games, Lionel Messi won’t travel to play with Argentina.
Instead, he will stay and continue working alongside some teammates, thinking only about the final stretch of the season and any competition between now and 2028 (the last year of Messi’s contract)
Because what used to happen was that Messi would get called up to the national team, play both friendlies, and upon his return, he would always miss one match and come off the bench in another.
This is because the GOAT is already 39 years old, so playing so many consecutive matches increases the risk of suffering an injury or discomfort.
Also, another crucial point: why Messi backing out of Argentina helps Inter Miami manage his workload, given his advanced age. I know the Herons’ captain has often said that the more games he plays, the better he feels.
However, as players age, Father Time inevitably becomes a factor, no matter their experience or passion for the game.
What I mean is that by only playing matches for Inter Miami and nothing else, the workload between games will be lower because Messi will have more days to rest and recover.
