St. Louis CITY made a promising move by bringing back 23-year-old left-back Anthony Markanich, who was selected 26th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. The deal is an opportunity to strengthen the club’s defensive depth and provide coach Bradley Carnell with more options on the left-back position for the upcoming Leagues Cup.

The decision to bring back Markanich showcases the club’s strategic vision, aiming to consolidate the team and bolster key areas for the season. With $75,000 guaranteed in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM) and the potential for an additional $75,000 in 2024 GAM based on certain incentives, St. Louis demonstrates its commitment to developing young talent and enhancing the roster.

Markanich’s experience at Northern Illinois University and his 13 regular-season appearances, amassing 570 minutes over the past two years with the Colorado Rapids, are indications of his potential as a player. His hardworking attitude and aggressiveness as a left-back are valuable attributes that can contribute to the team’s success, especially in competitions like the Leagues Cup, where defensive quality is essential when facing strong opponents.

Markanich’s arrival gives coach Bradley Carnell more options on the left-back position, complementing the presence of John Nelson, who has been the main occupant of the position. Additionally, Canadian international defender Kyle Hiebert can also be occasionally deployed on the left side, providing a variety of defensive choices for the team during the challenges of the Leagues Cup.

Despite the disappointment in the Leagues Cup, where St. Louis was eliminated in the group stage with a record of 0W-2L-0D, the expansion club is having a historic inaugural season in the 2023 MLS. Leading the Western Conference with 41 points, the team is proving its competitiveness and determination in the North American soccer landscape.

Markanich’s arrival can be seen as a calculated move to further improve St. Louis’ performance during the Leagues Cup. His youth and willingness to develop as a professional at the club are positive factors that can drive the team forward throughout the competition, offering more defensive solidity and increasing their chances of success.

The expectation is that Markanich will showcase his value and integrate into St. Louis’ roster during the Leagues Cup, demonstrating his quality and contributing to the club’s ongoing success in national and international competitions.

The signing of Anthony Markanich is a strategic and promising decision for St. Louis CITY. The left-back brings youth, defensive skills, and an opportunity for the club to further explore its potential in the Leagues Cup and solidify its position as a competitive team in the North American soccer landscape. With his arrival, St. Louis can aim for even greater achievements and elevate its performance in important tournaments like the Leagues Cup.
