Defense

Diego Palacios – 6

It was a much stronger performance from Diego Palacios this time around. He picked up an assist for Carlos Vela’s opening goal and helped preserve the clean sheet. Despite a hard tackle in the first half, he managed to stay out of the referee’s book. However, he did stay out of trouble in the second half which allowed him to go the full 90 minutes. Progressive in possession, often tucking centrally to receive the ball.

Eddie Segura – 7

The LAFC backline was disorganized in the first leg and the partnership of Eddie Segura and Dejan Jakovic did not appear to be capable of holding Leon’s attack in check. But Eddie Segura turned in a much better performance in the second leg which showed the quality he brings to the table. LAFC need Segura to anchor the backline this season. He did precisely that here.

Dejan Jakovic – 7

Much like his fellow teammate Segura, Dejan Jakovic had a polar opposite performance on Thursday night. The veteran defender was sharp and closed down the Leon attack aggressively. He left little space for Leon to turn on the counter-attack and was brave to close down the space. It is a positive start ahead of the MLS season.

Tristan Blackmon-7

Every single defender turned in a better performance than the first leg, and that might be more accurate for Tristan Blackmon than for anyone else. He was miles better in this victory. He assisted Vela’s second goal with a lovely low cross, was capable in possession, if committing a few turnovers early on, and was rarely troubled defensively. A massive performance for Blackmon should do wonders for his confidence as he continues to grow as a right-back.
