The World Cup has started officially, ladies and gentlemen. The first set of games started with Mexico’s victory over South Africa, and South Korea against the Czech Republic. Now, Friday, 12, we have the CanMNT and the USMNT with their openers.
The Canadian squad will face Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field, Toronto. A squad that faced many important injuries in the last few games.
Making soccer fans wonder if the former Vancouver Whitecaps wonderkid, Alphonso Davies, will play in his team’s tournament debut.
Is Alphonso Davies playing in Canada’s World Cup debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina?
The reality is that Alphonso Davies, Bayern Munich's current left back, has been dealing with an injury for some time now, putting his availability in doubt not only for this match.
Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, confirmed during a press conference that Alphonso Davies will not be participating in their first tournament match.
Despite the bad news, Marsch also stated that the former Whitecaps player is healing incredibly well, but unfortunately, he didn’t heal enough for the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Canadian superstar suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg. The muscle injury occurred in May during the second leg of Bayern Munich's UEFA Champions League semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain and has kept him sidelined since the end of the club season.
As a result, the CanMNT will be without a key player whose presence could have been decisive against such a disciplined and defensively resilient opponent. Still, the World Cup’s new format, the third-place team from each group also plays in the Round of 32.
This season, Alphonso Davies played 23 games, scoring one goal and delivering five assists for Bayern Munich. The 25-year-old couldn’t play a friendly match for the Canadian squad due to an injury that has been bothering him since April 28.
