Multimillion-dollar deal packed full of details
Campana's move eclipses the former record, which was a $2m in guaranteed GAM deal that took Paul Arriola to FC Dallas in 2022. In addition to the potential $750,000 in bonuses, Inter Miami also acquired an international roster slot from New England for both 2025 and 2026 as well as a percentage of any future transfer fee of Campana.
Inter Miami once again proved to be masters of using the league's financial mechanisms to their advantage in strengthening their roster. As club president Raúl Sanllehí underlined, the GAM earned from this transfer will be very important for future plans, considering how full their 2025 schedule is.
Campana's story at Inter Miami
Leo Campana first signed for Inter Miami in 2022 on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and after making his deal permanent in 2023, he solidified a spot as one of the club's top scorers with 32 goals-just behind Lionel Messi at 34 and ahead of Gonzalo Higuaín at 29.
Campana was instrumental in the success of Inter Miami, including the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield titles. In his MLS career, he has scored 28 goals and 8 assists in 80 games, proving to be a consistent force on the field.
What it means for the New England Revolution
For the Revolution, Campana's arrival satisfies an urgent need for firepower in attack. The team scored a league-low 37 goals in 2024, with leading scorer Giacomo Vrioni contributing just nine goals after a high-profile arrival from Juventus. Reports have emerged of Vrioni potentially moving on this winter, clearing a path for Campana to take center stage.
As Revolution sporting director Curt Onalfo put it: “Leo is a forward we’ve been tracking for a while, so we’re excited to bring him to our club. It’s great to have another key piece of the puzzle in place ahead of preseason.” With Campana, New England aims to assemble a competitive attack alongside players like Carles Gil, Tomás Chancalay, and record signing Luca Langoni.
Inter Miami’s restructuring phase
As Campana starts this new chapter, Inter Miami is deep into its own transformation. Coming off a historic season where the club set a single-season MLS points record of 74 and led the league in goals scored with 79, Miami is intent on maintaining its dominance.
The recent sale of Diego Gómez to Brighton & Hove Albion for $15 million has already boosted the club's resources for 2025. The owner of the team, Jorge Mas, has been clear in stating that the club is committed to strengthening the roster ahead of major competitions like the FIFA Club World Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup.
That Campana would leave-while significant-would seemingly fit into a bigger strategic direction to place Inter Miami for sustained success on both the domestic and international stage.
Looking ahead
Campana's record-breaking transfer sets not only a financial milestone but also a turning point in MLS's evolution. Deals like this mark the league's readiness to invest in promising talent while managing resources such as GAM effectively.
With New England, Campana signifies the addition necessary to continue their building towards an offensive identity. As for Inter Miami, a critical piece in their current successful run heads out as a goal-scorer and title-collector, thus leaving them in transition toward how Campana features with the Revolution and exactly how Miami takes advantage of its recent monetary moves.
