One club has already signed a midfielder to help them turn the second half of the season around.
Yes, I’m talking about Toronto FC, who have tied two games and lost the other one last Saturday against D.C. United.
For this reason, the Reds had to call back up and confirmed the signing of an experienced player to reinforce the midfield.
Toronto FC signs FC Heidenheim midfielder Niklas Dorsch
After a difficult start following the World Cup break, Toronto FC took decisive action by seeking an experienced European player to strengthen their squad.
That’s why the Reds confirmed the signing of German midfielder Niklas Dorsch from 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 of the 2. Bundesliga.
According to Toronto’s official website: “Dorsch's contract will run through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, and he will occupy an international roster spot, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and Canadian work permit.”
Before his departure to the MLS, Dorsch played for some of the most prestigious German clubs: Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg, and Heidenheim. While also being part of KAA Gent in the Belgian league.
However, Dorsch struggled to establish himself as a crucial player, moving between clubs and accumulating 243 appearances, recording 12 goals and 15 assists across these teams.
Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez said this about the team’s new signing: “Niklas joins us after several seasons in strong European competition. His skillset, mentality, and work rate will be a welcomed addition to our midfield. We look forward to Niklas playing a big role at the club for years to come.”
Dorsch is mobile, able to operate as both a central and defensive midfielder. His presence allows the other midfielders earn freedom to advance and contribute to the attack.
However, Toronto's head coach may need to change his formation to get the best out of his new signing, as the team's current system doesn't suit the German midfielder.
If you look at the Reds' recent performances, it's clear that their biggest weakness has been their inability to win the ball back in midfield.
That's exactly why the Canadian club decided to bring in an experienced European footballer to solve the issue and help the team climb into the playoff spots.
Right now, the Reds sit 12th in the Eastern Conference. Fortunately for them, there's still plenty of the season left to play.
