The USMNT just performed a football masterclass against Paraguay in their World Cup debut. Mauricio Pochettino found the team to compete in the group stage.

Because a tournament like this is step-by-step, you don’t have to rush, cause any silly mistake could send you home. However, US fans must celebrate this win as it is the first time the USMNT has scored so many goals in a World Cup match.

Still, this victory comes with several milestones achieved by certain players during the match against La Albirroja. One of these players is the USMNT captain and Charlotte FC defender Tim Ream.

Tim Ream achieved a milestone previously reached only by Clint Dempsey

By starting and wearing the captain's armband for the U.S. Men's National Team tonight, CharlotteFC defender and 2026 MLS All-Star Tim Ream became the first MLS player to captain the U.S. at a FIFA World Cup since Clint Dempsey in 2014.

The 38-year-old footballer played the entire game against Paraguay. With determination, aggressiveness, and calm, Ream became an impenetrable force; he not only dominated defensively but also kept Paraguay's best player, Miguel Almirón, under control.

Ream completed 88% of his passes in the attacking half and an impressive 98% in his own half. I understand that fans say Chris Richards is the USMNT's best player, but the experience of the former Fulham defender was key for Pochettino.

On the other hand, Clint Dempsey achieved this milestone while playing for the Seattle Sounders. The USMNT legend helped the team achieve the Round of 16, while having a group with Germany and Portugal.

Tim Ream expects to overcome the stage from the 2014 Brazil World Cup and reach further in the tournament.

However, this milestone and Ream’s stellar performance against Paraguay highlight the growing competitiveness of MLS, underscoring that the league deserves greater respect for the quality of talent it produces.
