Coach Marko Mitrović is on the hot seat. The humiliating defeat to France not only left the United States at the bottom of Group A but also sounded an alarm. With only two games left, beating New Zealand is crucial to keep alive the hope of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time since 2000.

Ah, but let’s not underestimate New Zealand. The OlyWhites are riding high after a narrow 2-1 victory over Guinea. Matt Garbett and Ben Waine were the heroes of the match, while Michael Boxall from Minnesota United FC was a real pillar in defense, playing the full 90 minutes. This team may lack Olympic tradition, but in 2020 they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Japan.

The United States, on the other hand, needs to bounce back from a performance that left much to be desired. Against France, they even had a golden opportunity when Djordje Mihailovic hit the post with the game still tied. But then, folks, the train derailed. Alexandre Lacazette, Michael Olise, and Loïc Badé scored for the French, sealing the Americans' fate that day.

Now, Mitrović and his team have to face reality: win or pack their bags. New Zealand might not offer the same resistance as France, and that could play in favor of the United States.

And look, victory won't just fall from the sky. New Zealand has already shown they can surprise. Garbett and Waine are quick, incisive, and can cause problems for the American defense if not well-marked. Boxall is a wall at the back and won’t make life easy for the US attackers.

On the other hand, the United States has talents that can make a difference. Mihailovic, even with his bad luck against France, is a creative and dangerous player. The attackers need to be sharp, and the defense has to stay solid and focused.

Since 2000, the United States hasn’t made it past the group stage, and this is a golden chance to change that history. But to do so, they need to beat New Zealand and then prepare for the final showdown against Guinea. Nothing comes easy in the Olympics.

The game against New Zealand could be the turning point the team needs. If they win, they'll be back in the fight, ready to face Guinea with renewed morale.
