Toronto FC, with their stunning 2-1 win over CF Pachuca, sent a clear message: "We've still got a lot to show." Sunday's triumph in the Leagues Cup, secured at BMO Field, was more than just a positive result. It was a statement of intent, a proof that the Canadian team can compete and win, even against the best.
Beating the newly crowned Concacaf Champions Cup winners is no small feat. This win gave Toronto FC the lead in Group East 6, a massive achievement for John Herdman's squad, considering the always-dangerous New York Red Bulls were also in the group.

The irony of the victory, however, is that it deprived Toronto FC of the chance to play the next match at home. Instead, the team travels to Florida for a knockout round clash against Inter Miami CF. But for Herdman, losing on purpose to keep home advantage wasn't an option. "You never go into a game thinking not to win just to get a home match," said the English coach. "The players were very clear before the game, the leadership group was exemplary."
And what leadership. The Toronto team not only stood toe-to-toe with one of Concacaf's best, but they were superior for the full 90 minutes. It was a brave and gritty performance, with the players delivering a display to be proud of. "It was a valiant and enjoyable performance from our players," Herdman said. "We knew what we were up against with Pachuca, an aggressive team that can smother you, and we needed a bit of courage."
Beyond courage, Toronto FC benefited from goals by Derrick Etienne Jr. and promising youngster Kobe Franklin, who broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 78th minute, just seven minutes after substituting Italian star Federico Bernardeschi. "We deserved the win tonight, and I'm very proud, especially of Kobe Franklin for getting that goal," Herdman added. "He's worked all year, all year for this moment. It's great to see moments like that happen. That's what you train for."
There's also the satisfaction of proving it's possible to beat an elite LIGA MX team and compete for titles – something Toronto FC fully intends to do on all fronts. "We know teams like this have championship levels. We were clear tonight," Herdman said. "We had a great opportunity, more than anything, for our fans, to show that we have more to give and that we can keep moving forward – whether in this competition or in MLS."
The victory over Pachuca showcased Toronto FC's spirit. Many thought Pachuca might come and take the result, but Toronto's players showed they wanted it more. Herdman, however, cautions that the team must stay grounded as they enter the knockout phase of the Leagues Cup, away from home, against the Supporters' Shield leaders, who beat them 3-1 in MLS less than a month ago. "We have to stay humble, that's the main point," Herdman said. "It's back to work on Monday. We have a huge game against Miami that we're excited about. We know a bit about them, played them recently. It's going to be exciting on Thursday: knockout soccer."
This game against Inter Miami CF will be another test for Toronto FC, a test of their ability to keep showing the bravery and determination they exhibited against Pachuca. For Herdman and his players, the goal now is simple: keep working hard, stay humble, and give their all in every game. The spirit demonstrated against Pachuca is something that must be maintained and carried forward.
