Toronto FC is fighting to stay above the playoff line. The team currently sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference while Austin FC, with one more point than Toronto, seeks to capitalize on this opportunity to move back into the playoff zone. This match has the makings of one in which every detail may spell the difference.

The Toronto FC Comeback That Should Be

Whirlwind may be the operative word to describe the Toronto FC season. With a record of 10 wins, 15 losses, and 3 draws, TFC has oscillated between impressive victories and frustrating defeats. But with Decision Day fast approaching, the team needs to get back to their winning ways, most especially after a 3-1 loss to DC United at the end of August.

They did put up some fight in that game, with Deandre Kerr netting his 15th goal for the club. However, for all its inconsistency and defensive errors, it was a game that saw DC United steal all three points with two late goals. Defensive frailty has indeed been a big problem for TFC; the team is letting in an average of 1.8 goals per game-one of the worst rates in the league.

Toronto's unstable defense has definitely been one of the major weak spots this season, and against a fast attack like Austin FC, TFC is going to need more organization and substance in the back.

Austin FC: In Search of Atonement

On the other side, Austin FC hasn't been in their best form either. A 1-0 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps at the end of August was a blow, especially considering the good run they had been on before the international break. However, Austin can take pride in securing three wins in their last five games and are still in the hopes of securing a playoff spot.

Gyasi Zardes was one of the high-flying players for Austin FC this season, having scored the winner against Toronto FC-the only previous meeting between the sides-way back in May 2023. The Texas side boasts an excellent record against Eastern Conference sides with 11 wins since 2022, and they view this match against Toronto FC as one of their best chances to take three more points on the road.

With a very pivotal game next week, Austin FC needs wins to be in playoff race positions. Head coach Josh Wolff knows this is the time to exploit any weakness from Toronto and press them from the word go.

Impact of Key Players

One of the most important names for Toronto FC in this match will be Federico Bernardeschi. The former Italian national team player has been the engine of the squad's offense, leading the team in both goals and assists. For Toronto, keeping Bernardeschi in good form and giving him space to create plays will be key. The forward Deandre Kerr, efficient in finishing, will also have an important role in attack.

In Austin FC, Gyasi Zardes remains the primary attacking threat. Along with him, Austin's midfield has shown consistency that could be a determining factor in nullifying Toronto's attack and taking the flow of the game to their comfort zone.

It will also be interesting to see how Henry Wingo, recently acquired by Toronto FC, fits in. Already, in his MLS debut, Wingo made a mark with an assist; much more can be expected from him during this final stretch of the season.
