Last Saturday, BC Place hosted one of those unforgettable nights for fans. In an electrifying clash, Vancouver Whitecaps FC defeated Club Tijuana 3-1, securing their spot in the Round of 16 of the Leagues Cup. This victory not only cemented the Whitecaps' presence in the competition but also marked their first competitive win against a Liga MX team. And let me tell you, it wasn't easy!
The game kicked off with both sides attacking relentlessly. We had barely settled into our seats when, at the 8-minute mark, Daniel Barbosa found Kevin Castañeda in the Whitecaps' box. The number 10 didn't miss, sending a precise volley that put the Mexicans ahead.

Of course, the Whitecaps didn’t take it lying down. The response came shortly after, with Brian White nearly equalizing at the 10-minute mark. He rose high and headed precisely following a corner taken by Sebastian Berhalter, but was stopped by an amazing save from Antonio Rodríguez.
The first half continued with chances for both sides, but the score remained 1-0 for Tijuana. The Whitecaps came back from the break determined to turn the game around. It didn't take long for Fafa Picault to show why he’s one of the team’s standout players. Just one minute into the second half, he charged into the opponent's area and, after a chaotic play, nearly scored. The initial pressure paid off, and at 49 minutes, Picault finally found the net, tying the game with an assist from Levonte Johnson.
The tie injected new life into the Whitecaps. Levonte Johnson, in an inspired performance, almost turned the game around seconds later, but his shot went straight into Rodríguez's face, forcing the keeper to be substituted. With the atmosphere tenser than a championship final, the Whitecaps kept pushing and, at 77 minutes, Johnson finally put the Canadians ahead with a beautiful shot from outside the box.
But it didn’t stop there. At 83 minutes, Picault, always him, stole the ball at the edge of the area and set up Pedro Vite, who put the cherry on top with a precise strike, making it 3-1 for the Whitecaps. With one player up after Aaron Mejía's red card, the home team just had to manage the advantage until the final whistle.
This victory was not just another game won. It was a statement that the Whitecaps can compete head-to-head with Liga MX giants.
Now, the Whitecaps are gearing up to face Pumas UNAM in the next round. Who would dare to doubt this team?
Fafa Picault was the star of the night, with an almost perfect performance. With his ninth goal of the season and fifth assist, he proved to be a key piece in the Whitecaps' attack. His contributions in recent matches are impressive, with eight direct goal involvements in the last five games.
Levonte Johnson also deserves a spotlight. With his third goal of the season and first assist, he proved to be a smart bet by the coach. Not to mention the competitive debuts of Finn Linder and Eliot Goldthorp, who brought freshness and energy to the team.
And what about Yohei Takaoka’s performance? Solid and efficient, he was crucial in key moments, ensuring Tijuana didn't extend their lead in the first half. The defense, composed of Mathías Laborda, Belal Halbouni, and Bjørn Inge Utvik, also deserves applause for their solidity and determination.
On Tijuana's side, frustration was evident. They started strong but couldn't withstand the Whitecaps' pressure in the second half. Kevin Castañeda’s goal, which opened the scoring, ended up being just a consolation. Antonio Rodríguez, who made some good saves, had his work cut out for him by Aaron Mejía’s red card and the injury that took him out of the game.
Pumas UNAM is next on the radar, and the Whitecaps are eager to keep making history in the competition.
