Minnesota United and Seattle Sounders face off in a crucial MLS match

The Sounders will enter as favorites, riding high off two very dominant wins against the Loons in the past two months. In both of the previous meetings held at Lumen Field, Seattle dismantled Minnesota with a precision that would impress a surgeon. Jordan Morris and Paul Rothrock scored in both games, cementing their roles as Loon enemies. But soccer's more than stats, soccer is emotion, resilience. And Minnesota United knows that history, just like this scoreboard, can be rewritten.

With 25 matches played, the Loons find themselves in ninth place, right on the cusp of the playoff zone, with 33 points. If form is to be termed middle-of-the-road, then this is it, at best, for a team eyeing playoff contention against the heavyweights of the Western Conference. But the truth of the matter is, they're only five points out of fifth place, giving the Loons a glimmer of hope. In their last five games, they have accumulated two wins, two draws, and one loss, a rollercoaster of results that keeps the fans on tenterhooks as the season comes to a close.

What really makes this matchup even more interesting is the psychological factor. Minnesota represents the only team in the current playoff zone with a negative goal differential: 40 scored against 41 conceded. They're a team that knows how to find the net but also knows how to suffer. In a league like the MLS, it may become fatal. Adding to the mix, the Loons haven't played an official match since July 30. The break might have given them time to rest and fit in their five new players—among them striker Kelvin Yeboah, a hopeful signing from Genoa in Serie A—but it also might have cooled them a bit.

On the other side of the pitch, Seattle Sounders arrive with the confidence of a team knowing what it's doing. With 37 points from 25 games, they are sitting in sixth, but only a point behind fifth. For all the Sounders' inconsistency this season, they have repeatedly found ways to stay in the race. Over their last five games, they have accumulated three wins and two losses. That type of stability may be all needed to make a difference in the playoff race. As with everything soccer, complacency becomes the enemy. Not especially comfortable would be that six-point cushion they have over the tenth-place team, knowing their rivals have a game in hand.

Now, here's a different angle: the mindset of a champion. Seattle moved into the Leagues Cup quarterfinals before losing 3-0 to Los Angeles FC. A tough pill to swallow, maybe, but one that could be helpful as fuelboard for that final push of the season. The Sounders aren't a team to roll over easily. They know what it takes to win and, more importantly, they have players who can decide a match with a flash of brilliance.

Jordan Morris, in particular, is one of those players. With a mix of speed, skill, and nose for goal, Morris has been a nightmare for opposing defenses. And it wouldn't be a shock if he repeats his heroics against Minnesota. Well, we all know how really unpredictable soccer can be.
