The LA Galaxy returns to the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2025-a competition that really has been a big part of their storied history. A team that last competed way back in the 2015-16 edition, Galaxy booked their place in this year's competition courtesy of a top-two finish in the MLS Supporters' Shield standings. However, this team from Los Angeles can secure an increase in chances by winning MLS Cup 2024 and thus securing a guaranteed spot into the Round of 16. How meaningful is this participation for Galaxy and its fans?

Return of a Giant

The LA Galaxy is one of the most iconic clubs in Major League Soccer, filled with a history of major accomplishments and legendary players. The LA Galaxy has taken part in the Concacaf Champions Cup a total of 11 times, for the last time in 2015-16. They won the competition in 2000. After an even longer wait, their return in 2025 stirs new excitement among the fans and the club in general.

This qualification to the Concacaf Champions Cup isn't just about adding another trophy to their cabinet, but it's also about rediscovering their place among the continental cream of club soccer. It is also a gateway to one of the most coveted stages of world soccer-the FIFA Club World Cup-where the Galaxy can once again flex their muscles.

Qualification is first, because this guarantees a ticket to each winner for entry into the Club World Cup.

The reason it puts Galaxy at an advantage when securing a place in the Concacaf Champions Cup is that it's the only avenue North American, Central American, and Caribbean clubs make to the highly exciting FIFA Club World Cup.  Where there are 32 teams competing against each other in the World Cup, including European and South American giants, Galaxy has their noses open to return to this prestigious competition, which they would do if they did well in the Champions Cup.

And gives it another layer of intrigue: the format of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. The competition is to take part in five knockout rounds. Home-and-away ties will lead up to the final, consisting of one single match. Consistently sharp performances at every stage of competition-the golden opportunity that the Galaxy have-a fact not lost on the Mexican coach.

Setting up to be one of the most competitive Concacaf Champions Cup tournaments in recent history, the 2025 edition has already confirmed 27 teams-including the LA Galaxy. The region's eyes will firmly be set on the matchups that will decide who will take home the Concacaf Champions Cup title. Of course, the Galaxy is aiming to be part of that narrative, but the road ahead will be tough.

Historically, Mexican clubs have dominated the competition, with teams like América, Monterrey, and Cruz Azul frequently reaching the later stages. Overcoming such powerhouses will be one of the greatest challenges for the Galaxy, particularly as the tournament advances. However, there is no doubt that the Galaxy holds the potential to surprise and take back its place among the best of Concacaf.
