Looks like Los Angeles FC is putting all their chips on the table, going all-in on Adam Ounas—a name that still feels like a bit of an unfulfilled promise. At 27, with a career full of highs and lows, the Algerian player is currently a free agent. His time at Lille wasn’t exactly spectacular either—44 matches, just two goals, and three assists. So, is LAFC shooting in the dark here, or could this actually pay off?

LAFC has never been shy about making bold moves. They’re always on the hunt for players who can keep them at the top of MLS. But with someone like Ounas, who hasn’t quite made it in Europe’s top leagues, doubt creeps in. Can LAFC succeed where Napoli, Bordeaux, and most recently Lille, couldn’t?

Ounas is definitely skilled—quick, agile, with dribbling that leaves defenders in knots. Yet, he’s got that unfortunate label of the “what could have been” player. Back when he first burst onto the scene in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux, he was pegged as one of the most exciting young prospects. Napoli, always with a sharp eye for talent, scooped him up for Serie A. But, spoiler alert: things didn’t quite go as planned.

Ounas found himself bouncing from loan to loan. Nice, Cagliari, Crotone—none of them managed to unlock his full potential. His recent stint at Lille, a club that’s known for polishing up raw talent, gave him plenty of chances to prove himself, but the final scorecard wasn’t pretty. Two goals and three assists in 44 appearances? Not exactly lighting up the stats sheet, especially for an attacker.

Now, with MLS on the horizon, Ounas might just be about to find his sweet spot. Or...maybe not. That’s where things get interesting. MLS, with its unique pace and competitive vibe, could be the perfect setting for a player like Ounas to finally shine. The league has a knack for reviving careers that seemed to be on the downswing in Europe. I mean, who could forget how guys like Zlatan Ibrahimović or Carlos Vela found new life in MLS?

But let's not get ahead of ourselves—Ounas is no Zlatan, not by a long shot, and comparing him to Vela might be a bit harsh. The Algerian still has to prove he can be consistent, that he’s not just another name hyped up only to fade away. And that’s exactly what makes LAFC’s situation so fascinating. They’re betting big on a player who hasn’t fully lived up to his potential. It’s a high-stakes move that could pay off big—or leave them holding the bag.

Another angle to consider is the mental game. Ounas, like many gifted players, seems to have those flashes of brilliance but struggles to keep it together long enough to really break through. In MLS, where the style of play is more physical, and matches can be unpredictable, having the right mindset is crucial. Is LAFC ready to handle the ups and downs of a player who, time and again, hasn’t shown he can be consistent?

On the one hand, LAFC has a supportive environment, with fans who stick by the team through thick and thin. But on the other hand, the pressure to deliver is real, and Ounas will need to prove he can handle it—and fast. Otherwise, he could just become another talented player who never quite lived up to the hype.

LAFC’s in a spot where they need to take bold steps to stay competitive in MLS. Bringing in Ounas is exactly that—a bold move. If it works out, they might just have found themselves a diamond in the rough, finally ready to shine. But if it goes south, they might’ve wasted time, money, and, more importantly, a roster spot that could’ve gone to someone more reliable.

Adam Ounas is a mystery. A player with clear talent but one who’s never fully put it all together. LAFC is betting that they can be the team to unlock that potential. But like any gamble, the stakes are high. If Ounas can adjust to MLS and bring some consistency to the table, he might just become a key piece of LAFC’s success. If not, well, he could end up on the long list of players who promised a lot but delivered very little.
