Is Henry Wingo the Savior of Toronto FC’s Defense?
The arrival of Henry Wingo at Toronto FC is, without a doubt, one of the most intriguing moves in the current MLS transfer window. The former Seattle Sounders player, now 28, brings with him a wealth of international experience from his stints at Molde in Sweden and Ferencvárosi in Hungary. With a contract signed until 2026 and an option for 2027, Wingo promises to be the missing piece in John Herdman’s defensive puzzle.
Toronto FC was in desperate need of a defensive boost. After several mediocre seasons and a prolonged absence from the Audi MLS Cup playoffs, the club saw Wingo as their chance to turn things around. The deal involved acquiring the player’s discovery rights from D.C. United for $75,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) for 2025.

Jason Hernandez, the club’s general manager, didn’t hide his excitement about the signing. “We’re thrilled to add Henry to strengthen our defense this summer, as he was one of our original targets for the 2024 season,” Hernandez stated.
Henry Wingo is no stranger to fans. During his time with the Seattle Sounders from 2017 to 2019, he made 31 appearances in all competitions. However, it was in Europe where he truly shined. With 4 goals and 9 assists in 133 games, along with six trophies to his name, Wingo proved to be a versatile and efficient player. His ability to compete in continental tournaments adds an extra edge to his resume, making him an even more valuable acquisition for Toronto FC.
But what exactly does Wingo bring to Toronto FC? Firstly, his winning mentality. Having tasted victory both in MLS and Europe gives him a unique perspective and a hunger to win that can be infectious for the rest of the squad. Additionally, his tactical versatility allows Herdman to deploy him in various positions across the defense, offering more options and flexibility to the team.
Wingo joins Richie Laryea, Kevin Long, and Nicksoen Gomis as the new additions to Toronto FC’s defensive line. This overhaul in defense clearly shows the club’s intent to correct past mistakes and build a solid foundation for the future. Defense has been Toronto’s Achilles' heel in recent seasons, and bringing in players with Wingo’s experience and skill could be the key to turning things around.
Toronto FC’s current position, eighth in the Eastern Conference, reflects the challenges the club has faced. However, with the arrival of Wingo and other reinforcements, the expectation is that the team will finally secure a spot in the Audi MLS Cup playoffs, something they haven’t achieved since 2020.
Can Wingo quickly adapt to the pace of MLS after his time in Europe? Will he be able to lead Toronto FC’s defense and bring stability to the team?
