After months of frustrating negotiations, Fluminense seems to be finally close to sealing the deal with Argentine forward Emiliano Rigoni. With notable stints at São Paulo and recently playing for Austin FC, Rigoni is now a free agent after terminating his contract with the American club in May of this year.

Fluminense’s management, who have long been open about their desire to sign Rigoni, are in advanced talks to bring the 31-year-old to Laranjeiras. The offer on the table is a two-year contract, a tempting proposal for a player who, besides his technical skills, brings the experience of having played in top clubs and competitive leagues. Since January, when the Carioca club tried unsuccessfully to sign him, the hope of seeing him don the tricolor jersey has not waned. At the time, Austin FC was adamant about keeping the player, but now, with Rigoni available on the market, the situation is quite different.

But what can Rigoni bring to Fluminense? A lot. Known for his speed, dribbling skills, and precision in finishing, the forward has everything to become a key piece in Fluminense’s attack. Additionally, his international experience can add a lot to the team, both on and off the field.

Fluminense’s interest in Rigoni is not new and involves a series of complex attempts and negotiations. In January this year, the Carioca club made a firm bid to bring the Argentine, but Austin FC refused to release him. At that time, Rigoni was doing well in the United States, and the American club knew his worth. Rigoni’s sale from São Paulo to Austin FC in 2022, for a sum of $4 million, clearly shows this.

Now, with the contract termination and the freedom to negotiate, the tricolor management sees a golden opportunity to finally fulfill their long-standing desire. Rigoni’s arrival could be the extra boost Fluminense needs to aim for higher goals this season.

Of course, there is still one last detail to be resolved: Rigoni’s response. But all indications point to a positive outcome. The forward seems willing to return to Brazilian soccer and sees Fluminense as an excellent opportunity to continue his career. The two-year contract offer is solid and attractive, and there’s no doubt that the environment at Laranjeiras would be ideal for him.

There are also challenges ahead. Rigoni will need to readjust to Brazilian soccer, which has its peculiarities and demands. The fans' expectations will also be high, and he will need to prove himself in the first few games to win over the tricolor supporters.
