The race for the MLS Cup isn't about the Cup anymore as the peak of the 2024 MLS season is reached. Instead, something much greater hangs in the balance: a spot in the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where for the first time 32 teams will take part and include two Major League Soccer representatives. The Seattle Sounders have already earned their ticket by capturing the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2022. But who will take the final spot, to be reserved for the 2024 MLS Cup champion?

Inter Miami: Messi and Suárez Chasing Glory

Inter Miami is currently one of the top favorites to lift the MLS Cup. Even with Messi out for a few games, this team has shown some great depth. Players like Matías Rojas, Leo Campana, and Robert Taylor have come through. If Miami continue with this rhythm and Messi returns to full force, it is highly likely that their chances of lifting the trophy and assuring themselves a place in the Club World Cup are pretty good.

LA Galaxy: A Season of Redemption

The other serious contender is LA Galaxy. Having had a rather poor 2023, it has bounced back and currently tops the Western Conference. Equipped with a well-rounded squad, Galaxy has all the ammunition to fight for the championship with key players like Riqui Puig and Marco Reus. Mixing young talent with experienced veterans might see Galaxy lift the MLS Cup and seal their ticket to the Club World Cup.

LAFC: Always in the Hunt

Runner-up of the 2023 MLS Cup, LAFC is still a powerhouse. Denis Bouanga's flair complemented by the arrival of Olivier Giroud makes them a formidable force. They fight at the top of the Western Conference, and with enough playoff experience to count on, their MLS Cup win will confirm their place in the Club World Cup.

Columbus Crew: Defending the Title

Then, of course, there are the reigning champions Columbus Crew, who cannot be neglected. Cucho Hernández leads the attack with Diego Rossi, and the Crew represents a lethal combination of offensive power and tactical organization. They have shown that they can win big games, and if consistency improves further, they can repeat as champions and book their position in the Club World Cup.

FC Cincinnati: Supporters' Shield Winners

Finally, FC Cincinnati, the winner of the 2023 Supporters' Shield, is another balanced team ready for a charge at the MLS Cup. Offering a very potent attack with solid defense, Cincinnati really does have a real shot at winning the 2024 MLS Cup to join the Seattle Sounders in the 2025 Club World Cup.
