Azcona, with his versatile and dynamic style of play, has quickly become an important piece in Inter Miami's puzzle. Since his debut as a substitute against Nashville SC in May 2021, he has shown the potential to shine on the big stage. But soccer is a box of surprises, and it's often necessary to sacrifice a little of the present to ensure a more solid future. The transfer to Las Vegas Lights is one of those strategic moves aimed at benefiting all parties involved.
Inter Miami's sporting and soccer director, Chris Henderson, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the significant role Azcona has played in the club's brief history. "Edison played an important role in our history at several milestones: he was a member of the first academy class, played in the first match with an Inter Miami academy team, was one of our first local signings and was our first local player to play in a match for the first team," said Henderson. Of course, the sale of Azcona is accompanied by a mixture of pride and a hint of nostalgia, recalling his contributions since the early days of the academy.
Azcona's career is a perfect example of how hard work and dedication can lead to opportunities. He has also made his mark on the international stage, representing the Dominican Republic in important competitions such as the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. His presence at the 2024 Summer Olympics will be a golden chance for him to showcase his style of play.
During his time at Inter Miami, Azcona made 10 MLS appearances, all as a substitute, as well as 39 appearances for Inter Miami CF in MLS NEXT Pro and USL League One. These numbers may seem modest, but each of these games was an opportunity for Azcona to grow and learn.
In 2020, Azcona excelled in his first season at the professional level as a registered player with the Inter Miami CF II Academy, earning two end-of-season honors for his performance. He was named to the USL League One Second Team All-League and was nominated as a finalist for the USL League One Young Player of the Year award. These accolades didn't come by chance; they were the result of a lot of hard work and dedication, both on the part of the player and Inter Miami's development team.
Azcona's sale to the Las Vegas Lights opens a new page in his career. The Las Vegas Lights will be a new challenge for Azcona, where he can continue to grow and perhaps become one of the big names in the USL. For Inter Miami, this sale is an opportunity to invest in new talent and continue to build a competitive team that can fight for titles in the near future.
