Every move a club makes is like a chess move, carefully calculated to maximize the odds of success. But every now and then, a piece just doesn’t fit on the board. That’s the story of Aaron Boupendza, whose contract with FC Cincinnati was suddenly terminated by Major League Soccer (MLS), effective immediately.

Boupendza, a 28-year-old Gabonese striker, came in with high expectations. His signing in June 2023 from Al-Shabab FC in the Saudi Pro League was seen as a major reinforcement after Brenner’s record transfer to Italian club Udinese. Boupendza was tasked with leading Cincinnati’s attack, entering 2024 as the main goalscorer, especially following Brandon Vazquez's departure to CF Monterrey in LIGA MX in January.

But reality often has a harsher side. Boupendza scored just 7 goals and provided 2 assists in 24 league appearances. Numbers that, while not terrible, seemed to fall short of the club’s expectations and needs. His last start was on April 13, and since then, doubts have started to cast a shadow over his performance and commitment.

Boupendza’s contract termination isn’t just an administrative move; it’s a clear signal that FC Cincinnati is looking for new directions. The opening of a Designated Player slot in the roster is an unexpected gift, a glimmer of hope that could bring a new star to shine on Ohio’s fields. And this opportunity comes at a critical time, with the secondary transfer window closing on August 14.

The MLS's decision to terminate his contract for not fulfilling his contractual obligations raises many questions. What exactly did Boupendza fail to do? Was it a matter of discipline, performance, or something more hidden behind the scenes?

With Boupendza out of the picture, Cincinnati has relied on players like Kevin Kelsy, Yuya Kubo, Corey Baird, Sergio Santos, and Gerardo Valenzuela to fill the gap in the attack. Each brings their own skills and style of play, but the absence of a consistent goalscorer is felt. Luciano Acosta, the current MLS Landon Donovan MVP, has been a beacon of hope, leading the team with 11 goals and 18 assists, playing in the number 10 role.

FC Cincinnati, currently sitting second in the Eastern Conference with 48 points (15 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws), continues its campaign with determination. The upcoming match against Santos Laguna in the Leagues Cup is a golden opportunity to prove the team can overcome adversity and shine even without Boupendza.
