Austin FC is living a real fairy tale in the 2024 Leagues Cup. The team didn't just win, they dominated two of the biggest clubs in LIGA MX.
In a series of electrifying games, Austin FC defeated CF Monterrey 2-0 and beat Pumas 3-2, securing their spot in the knockout stages. According to Wolff, the results against such formidable opponents weren't a complete surprise. He noted that the team's performances have been consistently improving over the last five weeks, culminating in decisive victories against Mexico's best. "These performances have been trending for me over the past four or five weeks," Wolff said after the match. "And now, I think you've seen this building, and we've beaten the best in Mexico."

The clash against CF Monterrey was a true test of endurance and skill for Austin FC. At home, against one of the continent's most dominant teams, the squad withstood a barrage of attacks. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver was forced to make six saves, keeping the goal intact while the team defended bravely. In crucial moments, Austin capitalized on counter-attack opportunities, and when Jáder Obrian put the team ahead at 61 minutes, it felt like the goal was destined despite Monterrey's continuous pressure.
Wolff's approach to the game was clear and strategic. "You have to be aware of who the opponent is. You have to be aware of who you are. We've talked a lot about that," Wolff said about his strategy for the match. "You remind me of the number of shots we allowed, many from long distances, many from bad angles, many are blocked outside the box. And they're a very good team. You don't want to give them many shots from anywhere on the field. They have quality."
Austin FC's sensational run in the Leagues Cup brought a welcome relief after a challenging MLS season. The team had lost three of their last five league games before entering the Leagues Cup and was in 10th place in the Western Conference, with a record of 8 wins, 10 losses, and 7 draws. Wolff pointed out that several factors contributed to the difficulties, including injuries, illnesses, suspensions, and the decision to start the season with a slim roster to maintain flexibility.
Despite the challenges, the triumphs in the Leagues Cup changed the atmosphere within the club. "Yes, it's certainly a significant moment right now," Wolff admitted. "... These guys know it. They feel it. And when they score goals and the energy within the group individually grows, the group as a whole grows. And the performances, these last four or five performances, and certainly these last two results, give confidence to the players. But you know, we're not going to get carried away."
Austin FC now has a break of more than a week to prepare for the round of 32, which begins on August 7. Wolff emphasized the importance of savoring the moment but also focusing on the next challenge. "We have to enjoy the moment, but we have to move on quickly," he said. "It's a tournament in the next game. It's elimination."
