The MLS transfer window is over. Yesterday, September 2nd, teams made the last official moves for the rest of the season until winter.
Some moves made sense, and some others didn’t, but one team was the clear favourite for the biggest event in any sport.
I’m talking about the New England Revolution. To discuss why it's the Revs, I’ll take into account the arrivals from July 13 to September 2nd of this year - meaning I’ll use the latest two months of the transfer window.
You might wonder why I single out New England. It isn’t about their roster’s star power, but rather how the new arrivals fit the team’s needs for the crucial second half of the season.
The New England Revolution are the clear favourite of this transfer window.
To start, and I said before, they are in first place because I take into account immediate quality, experience, and the gaps in the squad to fight in the second part of the season.
There are three moves by the Revs that I absolutely love, and they're a big reason why they're currently in first place. First, they landed USMNT World Cup goalkeeper Matt Turner on loan from Lyon, a significant move.
Turner brings European experience, is still in his prime, and offers the composure and adaptability needed to handle any situation between the posts. Having one of the most solid players in the MLS in goal.
After the USMNT goalkeeper, the Revs brought in the English player, Jack Harrison. If you played FIFA on PlayStation, you’ll know who I’m talking about when I mention his team: Leeds. Yes, he is the broke winger from the Premier League in the video game.
The arrival of the 29-year-old offensive player, still at a good age, will strengthen the team's left flank, bringing quality and experience from the highest level of soccer while addressing one of New England's main weaknesses this season.
And finally, they caught a lonely fish in free agency, recently released by Columbus Crew. This player is Dániel Gazdag, a 30-year-old midfielder with proven experience in the MLS.
With their tactical approach, the Revs need as many quality midfielders as possible. Their game plan relies on controlling possession and breaking down opponents, so the midfield depth is crucial to maintaining their style and sustaining pressure throughout matches.
A crucial factor is that the Revs didn’t have to trade away any star players to make these signings. Instead, they strengthened the squad while keeping the contributors who already helped them climb the standings.
