Minnesota United Bids Farewell to Mikael Marques

Minnesota United has just confirmed the departure of 23-year-old Swedish defender Mikael Marques, who’s set to join Västerås SK, a team in Sweden's first division. Now, Marques’s time on American soil may not have turned many heads, but it’s one of those stories that leaves a few question marks in the air; it nudges us to wonder about the MLS’s approach to recruiting and developing talent.

Marques arrived in Minnesota with high hopes; he looked the part of a young European talent with some ambition. It’s a farewell that leaves a bit of a bittersweet aftertaste, like a goal that just didn’t quite make it across the line.
