As always, we have the Ballon d’Or nominations. The truth is, as an MLS fan, you can’t be that excited about this trophy, because it is obvious that not a single player from this league will be among the nominees.
Why is this? This is because this trophy is given to a footballer playing in a European league; yes, it’s like that. The French award is not even close to being in the hands of a soccer player who’s not playing in Europe’s top five leagues.
However, this year, that myth could be over. I think you already know who I’m about to name, but one MLS player among the 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or.
Lionel Messi is among the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees
That’s right, the GOAT is once again nominated for Europe’s “most prestigious” trophy.
However, since he does not play in competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League, the top-ranked club competitions, it is very difficult for Lionel Messi to win his ninth Ballon d’Or.
Inter Miami’s captain earned his nomination primarily because of his World Cup performance. That’s not to say the Argentine star didn’t deserve it; what Messi accomplished this summer on the international stage, especially at 39 years old, was truly unmatched.
First, he helped Argentina reach the tournament’s final, repeatedly turning games around with crucial goals and assists. His performance against England, in particular, stood out as a true masterpiece.
The former FC Barcelona forward recorded eight goals and four assists on 8 games. Also, he surpassed Miroslav Klose and Marta as the all-time World Cup goalscorer (before Kylian Mbappe took over from him).
Still, the real reason behind his nomination isn’t because of the statistics; it’s the way he helped his national team in the most difficult moments. Let’s remember that Argentina were a team that, throughout the knockout stages, were always trailing on the scoreboard until late in the second half.
Those reading this will remember matches like the one against Egypt (Messi’s last goal for the Argentina national team in an official match), Switzerland, and England.
Nevertheless, Messi’s name deserves to appear on every Ballon d’Or nomination list. If the award truly recognizes the best player of the moment, there’s no one more deserving than him.
However, talking about the possible winner, it’s going to be Rodri. I can see why; I don’t think he was the best player of the season.
