As occurs with every club, when a head coach has numbers like this, the common solution is hiring another manager. And that’s exactly what the Herons did, but they didn’t target the right coach for the job.
Kily Gonzalez is Inter Miami’s new head coach
First, let's get to the concrete part, and that is that it's now official: Inter Miami have hired former Platense, Rosario Central, and Unión head coach Kily González.
The official details regarding when he will take charge have yet to be announced. Now, let’s go through the reason why you are here: Is Kily Gonzalez the right man for the job?
The quick and easy answer is: no. However, many of you don’t know him, and you can have the benefit of the doubt, but that’s not my case.
For starters, he is a coach who remains without a single trophy, having yet to achieve any significant success in his managerial career. Gonzalez has only managed the three aforementioned clubs (all from Argentina).
Even during his tenure with Rosario Central, widely considered his strongest squad, Gonzalez was unable to secure more wins than losses or produce a single season with a positive record. Herons fans should brace themselves for a familiar pattern of underwhelming results.
Kily has a coaching style that relies on a Plan A, but when that plan fails, he takes time, if it even happens, to find a Plan B or another way to approach the game.
Additionally, his approach is often predictable, favoring a reactive style focused on sitting back and counterattacking instead of seeking to control possession or dictate the tempo.
Considering the type of players on the Herons’ roster, this option is not optimal for them.
Let’s face it: Kily Gonzalez remains a manager with everything to prove, even his most recent stint with Platense did little to inspire confidence.
The real concern is that Inter Miami risks becoming a training ground for inexperienced coaches rather than a club led by a proven, winning manager.
Not everything is horrible about Kily Gonzalez
Although we have said everything to put Inter Miami fans into context, the truth is that Gonzalez's coaching style could benefit the Herons if well applied.
Kily wants his teams to play with intensity, directness, and aggression. It's true that since Rosario Central, he hasn't coached a team that could fit his style of play, but Inter Miami has the players needed to carry out his plan.
However, it's not that the former professional player has the answers the Herons are missing; instead, he arrives to try to fill the gap left by Guillermo Hoyos during his short spell as head coach.
The reality is that Kily González's current weapon is his promise to improve the Herons' current situation, but for now, it remains nothing more than that.
Still, this was not a good move by Inter Miami, as they should have found a better, more experienced coach who, at least, won a trophy at a club he was coaching.
