The World Cup has entered its most exciting stage so far: the knockout rounds. With the opening match ending in Canada’s win over South Africa, many teams are now making their final adjustments to avoid going home before reaching the final.

Nevertheless, the MLS has been active lately with some transfer news and waivers from many teams. Austin FC waived Robert Tayler, and Atlanta United made a defensive reinforcement.

Now, after parting ways with Tomás Avilés, CF Montréal has completed another player's departure, showing just how quickly the Canadian side is moving in this transfer window.

CF Montreal's Mahala Opoku transferred to Panetolikos FC

According to the team’s official website, CF Montréal transferred Mahala Opoku to Panetolikos FC of the Greek Super League. Also, the club will retain a percentage of any future transfer fee for the player.

Luca Saputo, Senior Director of Recruitment and Athletic Methodology for CF Montréal, said this after the news was confirmed: “We would like to thank Mahala for his contribution and professionalism during his years with the Club. We wish him the best of luck in his future career.”

The midfielder arrived at the Canadian club through a trade with Los Angeles Football Club in 2023. Just one week later, Opoku made his debut for the Impact.

Since then, the Ghanaian has spent the last four seasons with the club, making 49 appearances, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists.

With Montreal, Mahala Opaku won the 2021/22 Supporters’ Shield and the MLS Cup. Beign a regular starter, the Canadian side will need to find a replacement for Opoku, as they are transferring a player regularly used in the coach's system.

With MLS action getting closer to returning, Montréal must rediscover its level in the second half of the season if it wants to fight for a playoff spot. Right now, the Impact is outside contention in the American tournament.
