The world of soccer is not that great for the athletes. Yes, you have the big stars competing in the World Cup, but for most professional players, the sport is defined by constant challenges, struggling for playing time, battling injuries, and frequently moving from one club to another.
Many end up going on loan after failing to secure a spot at their current club, seeking new opportunities and stability elsewhere. Then there are players like Robert Tayler who were signed by a team, but their performances didn’t match the club’s expectations.
According to Austin FC, the former Inter Miami player is on the verge of a crucial decision about his career.
Robert Taylor becomes a free agent.
Per Austin FC’s official website, Robert Taylor becomes a free agent after the team exercises a contract buyout.
“Austin FC announced today that the Club has waived and exercised a Buyout of a Guaranteed Contract on winger Robert Taylor. Taylor will no longer occupy a Senior roster spot, and his wages will no longer count against the Club’s 2026 salary budget,” the club's official statement.
Since his first season alongside Lionel Messi, the Finnish forward has failed to live up to expectations at the Texas-based club.
The explosiveness and direct attacking style that made him such a dangerous player with the Herons have largely disappeared, and those qualities have yet to appear.
Robert Taylor signed with Austin FC in 2025 for $615 thousand from Inter Miami. This season, the Finnish forward played 24 games, scoring one goal and one assist.
Taylor’s drop in numbers compared to his time at Inter Miami is largely due to a knee injury that has sidelined him for the entire season.
Even though he isn’t what the manager expected, a knee injury kept him out for months, so Austin FC saw him as a liability rather than a crucial player.
That’s why his injury report is the main reason for the club to activate the buyout clause.
