When Antonee Robinson stepped onto the pitch in 2024, he wasn’t just playing for his club or country—he was playing for something more significant: the next chapter in the storied evolution of American soccer. By the end of the year, his efforts had earned him the prestigious honour of being named the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, a testament to his skill, resilience, and leadership. “I probably looked a little silly because I was shocked,” Robinson said. “I thought it was just a random interview with Tim about how the season was going, so when he told me I’d won, I was just in disbelief because it was the last thing I had expected. Tim had an incredible career with the National Team and throughout his club football, so it was a thrill to have that news delivered by him.”

A Humble Beginning

Born in Milton Keynes, England, to an American father, Robinson’s connection to the United States was woven into his identity from the start. He is known affectionately as “Jedi,” a nod to his childhood fascination with Star Wars. Antonee Robinson began his football journey in the youth academy of Everton, one of England's historic clubs. He joined the academy at the age of 11 and developed through the ranks, honing his skills as a left-back. Although he didn't make a senior league appearance for Everton, he gained valuable experience during his time there and through loan spells at Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, which helped him adapt to the physical demands of professional football.

These early experiences laid the foundation for Robinson's rise, eventually leading to his move to Fulham, where he established himself as a standout performer in the Premier League. His time at Everton and the English Football League helped shape the dynamic, versatile player he is today.

One of Antonee Robinson's standout moments at Fulham came during the 2023-2024 Premier League season in a match against Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Robinson delivered a near-flawless performance, defensively shutting down Liverpool’s dangerous right flank and contributing offensively. He assisted the winning goal with a pinpoint cross to Fulham's striker, leading to a shock 2-1 victory over the title contenders. The result showcased Robinson’s ability to shine against top-tier opposition, earning him the Man of the Match award and solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s best left-backs.

However, his decision to represent the U.S. Men’s National Team set the stage for his meteoric rise. Robinson made his senior debut for the USMNT in 2018, but during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he indeed announced himself on the global stage. His dynamic performances as a left-back showcased his blistering pace, defensive acumen, and ability to contribute offensively. By 2024, Robinson was not just a key figure for the national team but also an integral player for his club, Fulham, in the English Premier League.

In 2024, with Jedi patrolling the left flank, a dual United States citizen and England citizen in 2024, Robinson played the second-most games and minutes of his career in a calendar year. The U.S. recorded all four of its clean sheets this year with Jedi patrolling the left flank, including the “dos a cero” win against Mexico in the 2024 Concacaf Nations League Final and the critical 1-0 shutout on the road against Jamaica in the quarterfinal of the 2025 edition of the tournament.

Robinson’s defining moment with the U.S. Men’s National Team came during the 2024 friendly against Brazil. In this high-stakes match, Robinson was pivotal in shutting down Brazil's right-wing threats, including star winger and Barcelona’s captain Raphinha. However, it was his offensive contribution that stole the show. Early in the first half, Robinson intercepted a pass near the U.S. penalty area and launched a brilliant solo run down the left flank, beating multiple defenders before delivering a perfectly timed through ball to set up a foul, which led to the equalizing goal Christian Pulisic. The 1-1 draw sent the USMNT into the Copa América 2024 on a high. Robinson’s performance earned him global acclaim as a complete left-back capable of delivering in the most significant moments.

Robinson has become a cornerstone of the USMNT’s success. The team won the CONCACAF Nations League. Robinson’s defensive solidity and attacking contributions, including two crucial assists in the Nations League semifinals, earned him widespread praise. He also captained the side in several matches, further solidifying his leadership credentials.

Winning the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award was the culmination of Robinson’s years of hard work and perseverance. He reflected on his journey in his acceptance speech: “This award isn’t just about me. It’s about my teammates, family, and everyone who believed in me. It’s a privilege to represent this country, and I’ll continue to give everything I have.” The 27-year-old Robinson becomes the first defender to earn this recognition since Oguchi Onyewu in 2006 and the third player with ties to Fulham to earn the honour, joining Clint Dempsey (2007, 2011, 2012) and Kasey Keller (1997, 1999, 2005)

Robinson’s success has inspired a new generation of American players. His story—a mix of grit, talent, and unwavering determination—epitomizes the spirit of U.S. soccer. As he enters the prime of his career, Robinson is not just a player to watch but a leader who embodies the promise of American soccer on the world stage.
