The Major League Soccer (MLS) issued a three-game suspension to Philadelphia Union’s defender, Kai Wagner, for violating the league’s anti-discrimination policy during a match against the New England Revolution in October. The MLS’s decision to enforce this suspension is a significant step in the fight against discrimination in soccer and deserves praise.

Moreover, the decision to require Wagner to participate in educational and training sessions, as well as a program led by a restorative practices expert, is a constructive approach aimed at not only punishing but also promoting understanding and behavior change. It reminds us that discrimination has no place in soccer, and sports organizations have a responsibility to take actions to eradicate such behaviors.
