Inter Miami has yet to fill the third Designated Player spot on their roster. With the 2020 MLS season being delayed due to the spread of COVID-19, who could be the final talisman for Diego Alonso’s side?

As the weeks drag on, naturally, people will start to hypothesize about which player Inter Miami could bring in as their third and final Designated Player. The club has been linked with a myriad of world-class players with none of the rumors being close to true. However, with the transfer market likely to have major changes after the pandemic ends, the likelihood of some of these big names coming to MLS isn’t too far off.

Does La Rosa Negra splash the cash on a big-name number nine? Or, do they go after a midfield maestro that can fit the high pressing, quick passing style of Diego Alonso? Here are four players that Inter Miami could sign as their third DP.

4. Edinson Cavani

The man that has been linked to a move to South Florida ever since the club’s inception, Edinson Cavani would be the ideal center-forward to lead Inter Miami’s front line. With his speed, physicality, and ability to bully defenders, the 33-year-old would be a seamless fit into Diego Alonso’s system.

Based on Inter Miami’s first two matches, it is clear that Alonso likes to play with a number nine that can play off the defender’s blindspot, finding the half-spaces and exploiting that space in behind. Cavani is perfectly suited to that role, his movement off the ball one of his key tenets.

If Cavani were to transfer to Inter Miami, the expansion side would not only have a striker than can get up to 10+ goals a season, they’ll finally have the ‘star player’ that many in the media have been waiting to see.
