As the 2020 MLS season experiences a delay due to COVID-19, we look back at four players that have already made an impact for Inter Miami.

It’s been almost a month since Inter Miami played their last game. Since then, the spread of COVID-19 has rapidly been growing throughout the United States; MLS swiftly took action and postponed the season until further notice.

With the soccer world coming to a collective halt and players practicing social distancing, let’s take a look back at Inter Miami’s first two games and at some of the players that stood out during their brief time on the pitch.

Although the season was only two games in, these four players managed to make an impact under Diego Alonso. They took to his tactics well, created chances, defended even better and reaped the benefits of Alonso’s teachings.

4. Nico Figal

Nicolas Figal has proven to be one of the most important signings for Inter Miami. The 25-year old has been a rock in defense. Although Miami has lost both of their games, Figal’s defensive stability and flexibility not only kept the backline in check but also provided Diego Alonso with the tactical freedom to play how he wants to.

Aggressive, smart, and physical against LAFC, Figal held the trio of Diego Rossi, Carlos Vela, and Brian Rodriguez to only one goal. He completed 17 accurate passes, made two clearances and won seven of his duels. He also showed some of his attacking ability, bringing the ball up into midfield if the moment called for it.

Against D.C. United, Figal played as a left-sided center-back in a defensive three. In this role, he had more freedom to go forward and used his pace and skill on the ball to dribble Miami out of danger or found the space to have a shot on goal. When the season eventually proceeds and Inter Miami can get into back into the rhythm of things, look out for Nico Figal to have an even bigger presence on La Rosa Negra’s backline.
