Decision Day 2016 was a thrilling end to a disappointing season for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Already eliminated, Vancouver welcomed Cascadia rivals Portland to BC Place. Needing a three-goal victory, the Whitecaps delivered. As the icing on the cake, the 4-1 win not only allowed Vancouver to lift the Cascadia Cup. It also eliminated the Timbers from the playoffs.

This season we’ll get a rematch of 2016. This time, it’s Vancouver’s turn to head to Portland for the final game of the season.

Seattle may be closer to Vancouver geographically, but it’s the matches against Portland that feel like a true rivalry. Last season’s three matches against the Timbers saw plenty of drama. Goals (14) and cautions (13) flowed. Kendall Waston picked up retroactive suspensions twice.

In 2015, Portland defeated the Whitecaps in the playoffs. These two teams do not like each other. If both teams make it to Decision Day needing to win, then the stage will be set for an intense encounter. Hopefully a strong referee is selected, and Kendall Waston keeps his head this time.
