The D.C. United Drink Your Enemy Series is a new series here on MLS Multiplex taking a look at local beers from D.C. United’s opponents. This week’s edition looks at Unibroue’s La Fin du Monde, which is based out of Chambly, Quebec in Canada. D.C. United will take on the Montreal Impact on Saturday night at 8pm EST on Comcast SportsNET D.C. and on TSN2.
Bonjour! Comment-allez vous aujourd’hui? Je fais beaucoup parce je buvais La Fin Du Monde!

So this week D.C. United heads north of the border to take on the Montreal Impact and thus our series will also focus on one of the local beers of Canada. Although Canada is perhaps better known for Molson, Moosehead, and Labatt it also has an array of top quality Belgian beers. Without question one of the best is Unibroue Brewing Company and their signature beer La Fin Du Monde.

Unibroue Brewing Company was founded in the early 1990’s when its creators Andre Dion and Serge Racine bought a majority stake in another brewery, La Brasseire Massawippi. Since its early beginnings the company from a regional brewer in the Quebec province and expanded all across Canada and into the United States.
La Fin Du Monde (The End Of The World) was created in February 1994 and has become one of Unibroue most popular beers. It has won 5 platinum, 6 gold, and 1 silver medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute (who host the World Beer Championships) which is the most from any Canadian Beer. On Beer Advocate it has a score of 96 out of 100 which qualifies it as a “World Class” beer.
So what makes La Fin Du Monde such a great beer and why should a D.C. United supporter kick one back during tonight’s match? It is simple: it is smooth and strong. La Fin Du Monde is a Belgian style Tripel Golden Ale. Belgian style typically means that is going to be a bit fruitier than other beers. The term Tripel means strong ale and is derived from the coastal region in Belgium and the Netherlands where monks made the beer.
Although it is a full-bodied beer it is not nearly as overpowering as say a India Pale Ale. The first taste gives off a taste of coriander and a bit of oranges. Belgian style ales are typically very fruity and though they may be strong they are not particularly bitter. That is not to say that it is a light beer; La Fin Du Monde has an Alcohol By Volume percentage of 9.0 and is deceptively heavy.
One thing to keep an eye on: its fizzyness. Since it is corked it will be very lively upon being opened. There is nothing worse in this world than lost beer so have your glass ready or be in a state that you can drink quick!
La Fin Du Monde is a tremendous beer and a testament to the brewing industry in Quebec and in Canada. So as you watch D.C. United take on the Montreal Impact make sure to give it a try!
