Montreal Impact, Los Angeles Galaxy Consigned To Draw At Stade Saputo (VIDEO)
Frank Klopas’s Montreal Impact and Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy played to a 2-2 draw at Stade Saputo in Montreal, Que. It was a tale of two halved for Montreal and LA, with plenty of poor finishing to go around. The draw was more costly for the Galaxy, who will now head into their Sunday match against the San Jose Earthquakes without two of their top players.
Here are six things we learned, followed by player ratings, for the match between the Montreal Impact and Los Angeles Galaxy.
1. A tense start to the game
Early on in the first half, Marco Di Vaio had a left footed shot from the center of the box miss to the left. In the 10th minute, Andres Romero had an attempt from right side of the box saved by Brian Rowe. In the 12th minute, Gyasi Zardes had a right-footed shot miss to the left. In the 15th minute, Montreal’s Calum Mallace tried a through ball, but DIlly Duke was caught offsides.
2. Marco Di Vaio starts things up
In the 18th minute of play, Robbie Keane had a right-footed shot from the centre of the box miss to the left. Felipe Martins had a chance in the 20th minute blocked, and in the 21st minute of play, Stefan Ishizaki missed to the right. THe 23rd minute saw Baggio Husidic have an attempt saved by Evan Bush. In the 28th minute, Di Vaio scored his 28th goal of the season. Have a look.
3. Nacho fast, Los Angeles!
In the 32nd minute, Keane had a right-footed shot from the center of the box miss to the left. Ishizaki had another chance in the 33rd minute miss to the right following a corner. Dan Gargan was cautioned in the 37th minute, meaning he will be unavailable for Sunday’s match with San Jose. Keane’s next chance on goal was saved in the 38th minute of play. Omar Gonzalez had a header miss to the right in the 39th minute, while Dilly Duka had a shot in the 40th minute saved by Rowe.
In the 43rd minute, Ignacio Piatti scored his fourth goal of the season, continuing his hotstreak, while Landon Donovan was cautioned soon after for dissent. That makes it two key players who will be out for LA. Zardes had an attempt from the center of the box blocked in the second minute of first half injury time.
4. Hot streak continues for Gyasi Zardes

At the break, Robbie Rogers came in for Ishizaki, while Wandrille Lefevre came in for Matteo Ferrari. Piatti was cautioned for a foul on Landon Donovan in the 53rd minute. In the 55th minute, Donovan’s through ball for Robbie Keane was ruled offsides. In the 59th minute, Karl Ouimette came in for Hassoun Camara, but not after Gyasi Zardes scored his 15th goal of the season to make it 2-1. Juninho initial miss found Zardes, who slammed it home on the rebound.
5. Alan Gordon delivers a spark
In the 62nd minute, Alan Gordon came in for Baggio Husidic in the hopes that the Galaxy target forward can reel L’Impact back in. It didn’t take long for him to make his own impact. Following an attempt from Robbie Rogers that was saved, Gordon scored his third goal of the season to make it 2-2 in the 64th minute. Donovan played a key role in the assist, and that makes it 132 career regular season assists in MLS for LD.
6. One-sided team stats for Los Angeles, but lack of finishing to boot
In the 70th minute, Landon Donovan had a right-footed shot from outside the box miss to the left. In the 73rd minute, Maxim Tissot came in for Dilly Duka. Martins was given the yellow card for a foul on Gordon in the 80th minute of play. In the 82nd minute, Piatti tried a through ball for Romero but he was called back for offsides. A through ball from Gonzalez to Keane was called back for offsides in the 86th minute.
Mallace was cautioned in the 87th minute for a foul on Donovan. In the 90th minute, Jose Villareal came in for Zardes. In the second minute of second half stoppage time, Keane had a shot from the left side of the box blocked, and in the third minute, Leonardo’s missed header summed up a tough night on the road for the Galaxy against Montreal.
The team statistics below show that the Galaxy dominated most of the categories. That’s because Los Angeles played with some desperation in the second half and were unlucky to only salvage a point due to poor finishing. The losses of Donovan and Gargan due to suspension will no doubt put the Galaxy in a tough position against San Jose on Sunday.
