Utah Royals: A Season of Resilience and Growth
This season has indeed been an endurance test for Utah Royals FC. The team presently lies tenth with 25 points garnered from 7 wins, 14 losses, and 4 draws. Competing at this magnitude is tough, but there has been progress for the Royals, especially after Matchday 15, where they have only lost three times since then-a record rivaled by only Gotham FC and Orlando Pride for consistency in recent games.
This spirit of fight is what came out when they drew 1-1 against Angel City recently. It was Spanish midfielder Claudia Zornoza who shone by opening the scoreline with a fantastic free kick in the 21st minute, but Angel City managed to level the scoreline in the second half. Still, the Royals dominated shots on goal to attest to their growth and relentless pursuit of victory.
Complementing a determined squad, Utah Royals will welcome back key players who were on international duty during the just-closed FIFA window. Returning to the team are Ana Tejada, Dana Foederer, Mandy Haught, and Mina Tanaka, bringing with them experience and freshness. Tejada, who featured for Spain, and Haught for the U.S., shone with great performances. Tejada was subbed off in the 75th minute against Italy, while Haught made her first start for the U.S., keeping a clean sheet in a win over Argentina. Foederer impressed with the Dutch U-23 and Tanaka scored in Japan's win over South Korea. It gives a boost to form since these returns give life to the team in a bid to end the year with something memorable.
Gotham FC: Steadiness, Dominance, and Consistency at the Top of the NWSL
On the other side, NJ/NY Gotham FC takes to the field with quite the impressive record. Currently ranked third in the NWSL with 53 points, Gotham FC has been nothing short of the best team in the league since May, on a winning streak and extremely cohesive in offense. In the last game, they defeated Orlando Pride 3-1, having key contributions in the game by Sam Hiatt, Rose Lavelle, and Ella Stevens, scoring crucial goals.
Gotham comes into this showdown with the Royals with a seven-game unbeaten streak, and Yazmeen Ryan has been that consistency which the opposing defenses needed to be worried about. It was Ryan who scored that winning goal against the Royals back in September, in that 1-0 victory-a match balanced, yet tipped in the way of Gotham. Such intensity and ability to keep that advantage going therefore makes Gotham a force to deal with.
The Royals' challenge is trying to pace themselves to keep up with a giant through a whole season.
The Royals know that this weekend's match represents an opportunity to show the fans and critics alike that they may have the potential to fight with the best of the league. Offensively, they have the accolade of scoring more long-range goals this season than any other team in league history. That alone shows a team not afraid to take its chances, backed by players who believe in themselves.
However, against Gotham, focus will be required across the full stretch of the field. The backline needs to be in sync because there are players on the field who can change the game with just one touch. The Royals will also need solid midfield coordination in order to control the tempo of the game and sustain the constant pressure from an opponent that capitalizes on every mistake.
