The NWSL 2026 season is in full swing. Teams are competing, and players are making their move on the pitch and off of it. As the year wears on, several players are emerging as stars.
In the WNBA, this superstar and face of the league is Caitlin Clark. She is seen on television in most televised games and in brand partnerships. Gainbridge, State Farm, and Wilson are to name a few for Clark.
Similar to Clark, some players are also gaining many partnerships and building strong relationships to form their individual brand and the profile of the league itself. Sophia Wilson is one such player.
Wilson (also National Team member) is currently playing for the Portland Thorns. She currently has emerged as a marketable athlete.
Currently, the Thorns star has been seen in commercials for Nike in its Super Bowl campaign this past February. She has also worked and signed partnerships with Ally Blank and Chipotle. It shows that she can expand past just sports-related ventures.
Like Caitlin Clark, Sophia Wilson has been working with a financial company in Ally Bank
Clark is working with Gainbridge while Wilson is partnering with Ally. Working with a company that deals in finance demonstrates that Wilson and her team are working on providing her options upon her retirement.
And like Clark, it is a strong indication to use a marketing strategy for a place like Ally Bank to advance their services with Wilson and her appeal to soccer and younger fans.
Accordig to Edo.com, the ad campaign for Ally Bank starring Wilson had a 127% better result than the regular NWSL ad.
Wilson does have an advantage over Clark. The NWSL continues to want to bridge the gap between newer and older stars.
Passing the torch is important for any league to flourish. Past NWSL stars such as Tobin Heath have paved the way and wished to highlight a player of Wilson's caliber.
It is in stark contrast to Caitlin Clark. The WNBA and former stars seemed to wish for her to fail as a player and marketable talent.
Now, with the summer heating up and both leagues in the middle of their seasons, they can both market their top stars.
Wilson has a chance to be just as popular as Clark and, with the backing of the NWSL, could surpass her in terms of popularity.
Both players will have chances to continue their marketability this summer.
