Both Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson are having great 2025 campaigns. The National Team and NWSL stars each have scored over 10 goals this season. But they are not leading the NWSL this season.
That title belongs to Ashley Sanchez. The 27-year-old is on a tear throughout the league. She currently has 15 goals this season. She is on pace to break numerous records.
It is hard to imagine the Courage being in a playoff position this late in the year if it were not for Sanchez. She has been the leading charge and is drawing double teams, giving other players open looks. Evelyn Ijeh is tied with both Rodman and Wilson with ten goals this season.
It is impressive and has given Sanchez a high profile, which should get her looks for a new contract or attention at the US National Team level. The records she is breaking currently are worthy of a spotlight.
Ashley Sanchez has broken the Courage's single season scoring record
It was held by Lynn Biyendolo. She is also now tied for the most goals by an American player. Those were held by Crystal Dunn and Alex Morgan. After a brace against Angel City FC, she is tied for the most braces in a season with four. That is incredible company for Sanchez.
She has plenty of games to break and shatter each of these records. The forward now should be on her way to an MVP award at the end of this season. What happens in the postseason should not dictate what happens with the award.
Her 15 goals are the most she has had in her career for a season. Drafted by the Washington Spirit in 2020, the most she had in a season was 5 goals. It seems she has hit a new gear and now has a chance to have a season that is remembered strongly.
Now what is left is the next step for Sanchez. She fell off the radar at both the club and national levels. But now, can she use this season as a way to get back into the graces as a dominant athlete in the NWSL and camp call up to the National Team?
With the weather turning a bit cooler it will be interesting to see if she can shatter the NWSL record.
