Toronto FC made a serious move by calling up Markus Cimermancic to the first team. At only 20 years old, the midfielder inked a deal that lasts until 2026, and there are provisions for 2027 and 2028 as well. Early on, he began his experience with the team, and now he has an opportunity to establish that he has what it takes to play for MLS.

The long journey to the first team

Cimermancic has been at Toronto FC for ten years, having developed through the academy and later with Toronto FC II. He had accrued quality experience within three seasons, appearing in 59 matches, finding the back of the net six times, and registering eight assists. His consistent progress made the club management sit up and notice, hence choosing to invest in him as one of the futures of the club.

"Markus showed tremendous commitment and remarkable development from the academy level to TFC II. Now, we want that development to continue at the top level," Toronto FC general manager Jason Hernandez said. The club believes he has the potential to be a central midfielder who brings tactical discipline and good vision.

The impact of his promotion and upcoming challenges

The transition from MLS NEXT Pro to the MLS is tough, and Cimermancic will have to adapt to the heightened intensity and pressure. Having signed short-term contracts and played in four MLS matches last season, he already knows what it's like. But with a spot on the regular roster, the battle for minutes will be even tougher.

Toronto FC's strategy is clear: develop from home and nurture homegrown talent. Cimermancic is the team's 36th homegrown signing, continuing this philosophy. The team also recently promoted goalkeeper Adisa De Rosario, demonstrating its continued dedication to youth players.

What can Toronto FC expect from Cimermancic in the MLS?

The midfielder comes into the team at a crucial time, with Toronto FC needing to rebuild and be competitive once again. He has the potential to add more stability to the midfield and increase the team's ability to create. His transition to the MLS level will, however, decide his role and lasting influence.

If he can earn his spot and gain the trust of the coaching staff, Cimermancic will have the ability to be a key piece in the rebuild of Toronto FC. Now, it's his turn to make this moment pay off on the field.
