Spain has always been known for their great players, both in men's and women's soccer. In the women's game, there have been great names like Jenni Hermoso, Alexia Putellas, and Aitana Bonmati. Now as more Spanish internationals come to the NWSL, these are five players looking to make an impact for their teams.
Esther Gonzalez
NJ/NY Gotham FC

Esther Gonzalez is a 32-year-old striker who is in her third season now with Gotham and the NWSL's current Golden Boot leader. She has been a sensational scorer throughout her career and has played for Real Madrid, Levante, and Athletico Madrid, before coming to the NWSL. Gonzalez has also played for Spain at the international level and she has scored 20 goals internationally.
With Gotham, Gonzalez has scored a total of 18 goals in her three seasons. Her highest total was in the 2024 season, where she netted 10 goals. In six games in the 2025 season, the forward already has five goals, which is a good start in trying to get her highest NWSL goal tally. Currently, Gonzalez sits ahead of Ashley Hatch by one goal in the Golden Boot race.
Maitane
Chicago Stars FC

Formally with Gotham FC, Maitane transferred in the offseason to the Chicago Stars. She has also played for Athletico Madrid, Sociedad, and Levante. While Maitane is not a prolific goalscorer, she can hold down the midfield and brings experience with her at the age of 30.
Maitane helped Gotham to the 2023 NWSL title and played over 30 games with the team. She brings in her technical skills on the ball and also serves as a good line of defense in the midfield. In her 11 seasons in Spain, Maitane scored 42 goals in all the competitions with her three teams.
Maitane has only scored one NWSL goal, which came for Gotham against the NC Courage. She'll be looking to up her tally and score her first goal for Chicago, who currently sit 13th in the table after only one win in their opening five games.
