Sylvester Stallone has recently been honored by the Kennedy Center for his film work. He may be known for his sports character, Rocky, from the franchise he popularized. He played the character in eight films.
However, there was another sports movie that is a hidden gem. It is the soccer film, Escape to Victory or Victory, released in 1981. The film starred Stallone alongside Michael Caine and Max Von Sydow (The Force Awakens).
The film was directed by Oscar-winning John Huston. Huston himself was a veteran of World War II and served during the period in the 1940s.
The premise is about a group of Allied prisoners of war who play a soccer match against the Nazi-German regime. The Allies are working on planning an escape for the prisoners during the match itself. It is a powerful film about both teamwork and freedom.
The film is also notable for featuring several famous soccer players. These include American born player, Werner Roth and English soccer player Bobby Moore. Both players had over 100 appearances for their respective national teams during their career.
The film also featured a role for one of the greatest soccer players of all-time, Pelé
The Brazilian was featured prominently throughout the film along with Stallone and Caine. Throughout the soccer scenes, he displayed his ability both as the character he portrayed and the obvious ability he demonstrated throughout his career.
Stallone played the goalie for Allied Forces in the film. He worked with English goalkeeper, Gordan Banks to make sure he looked the part of a goalie. It shows the dedication he has displayed to his craft and work.
Gordan Banks won a World Cup in 1966 for England. It was more than likely the perfect person to teach Stallone how to play a goalie in a film.
The public will forever know Stallone from the character of Rocky Balboa. I remember my dad showing me Victory when I was in junior high school because he knew I liked Rocky. It was the first time I was introduced to Pelé. I soon went to the library and got a book about his storied career.
As Stallone is remembered for his work, it may be time for soccer fans to look out for this hidden gem. It has an uplifting story and great soccer scenes during the final match.
Soccer fans can look no further for a great film.
