It had been a long start to the season for one NWSL team. To make matters worse, they also had to wait almost a month to get their first victory.
Racing Louisville FC had started the season 1-3 and how been out of action due to the international break. They were struggling. That changed on Friday night, after a career night for one defender.
Lauren Milliet had two goals to secure her first career brace and the game for Racing
One of the original players for Racing's expansion team in 2021, Milliet had not scored in four years but came through right when the team needed it most. It helped beat Orlando Pride at home 3-2 in front of a packed house.
Her first goal came at the 19th minute of the first half. It was a long distance shot but found a corner for a goal that should be remembered if Racing can turn things around this season.
It was the second goal for Milliet though, that was key for Racing. Off a pass from superstar Emma Sears, the defender found the back of the net in the 50th minute.
It was key because it put Racing up 3-1 in the second half. A two-goal lead helped take the pressure off an organization has been on the wrong end of a bad trend so its inception.
There has been too many times to count, that the team has gone up on the pitch. There also has been way too many times to count they have blown a second half lead or tie.
This season, they have had leads or been tied at the end to only allow a late goal or penalty kick, resulting in a loss or draw for the team.
Against the Washington Spirit, they were up 2-0 only to secure one point when they allowed two second-half goals. Milliet's performance and their ability Friday to close out the game could be a strong sign they are ready to put this trend behind them.
The team has a strong offense as evidenced by the fact that it has scored many goals this season. But the defense needs improvement and Milliet's aggressive performance is something to build on.
Last season, they finally made the postseason for the first time in franchise history. If Racing can use the momentum gained from Milliet, they may be able to climb the standings and once again secure a playoff berth.
