USMNT's explosive win over Bolivia at Copa America 2024 reveals two unlikely heroes
The USMNT's victory over Bolivia in the 2024 Copa America was much more than just a 2-0 scoreline. It was a spectacle of emotions, twists and turns and the emergence of two heroes who could define the future of American soccer: Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi.

In the 44th minute, Balogun did what he does best: he put the ball in the back of the net with a precise shot that left the Bolivian defense speechless. It was his fourth international goal and his first in the 2024 Copa America, a crucial moment that extended the team's lead after Christian Pulisic's lightning strike earlier in the game. Balogun, with the calmness of a veteran, celebrated his success and showed the world that he is here to stay.
On the other hand, we have Ricardo Pepi. Replacing Balogun in the 65th minute, he had four clear chances, but the ball seemed determined to avoid the back of the net. Still, Pepi, known as "El Tren", didn't let frustration take over. He moved through the mixed zone like a non-stop train, holding his head high.
Balogun summed up the feeling well after the match: "As a striker, whenever you play in a tournament of this magnitude, you just want to hit that goal and gain confidence. I managed to do that today." While Balogun was delighted, Pepi, although frustrated, continued with the determination of a true warrior. The position of starting center forward for the US national team is a constant battle, and both players know that any change in fortune can mean everything.
Coach Gregg Berhalter seems to have a little more faith in Balogun these days. Since the youngster left Arsenal for AS Monaco, he has faced ups and downs, but has always shown his potential. His decision to represent the USA was seen as a major coup for the American program, and the expectation surrounding his performance has only increased since then.
But soccer is a team sport, and chemistry on the pitch is essential. Recently, Balogun has started to show a better rapport with his teammates, especially after a precise pass from Antonee Robinson against Colombia. These connections are vital for turning a good player into a great one. Balogun feels this evolution: "I don't really feel like the new guy anymore. I feel like I need to be someone you can trust, consistent and who changes games."
Meanwhile, Pepi has been on a mission ever since he was left out of the 2022 World Cup. With seven of his 10 international goals scored since then, he has proved to be an impactful substitute. But to surpass Balogun, he needs to convert more of his chances.
Berhalter, however, continues to have faith in Pepi. He highlighted the impact the young striker has had with his runs and constant pressing. "When you have so many chances against an aggressive team, you're doing something right," said Berhalter.
Ultimately, a striker's performance is measured by his ability to convert chances. Balogun had the edge this time, but Pepi is not out of contention. Waiting in the wings is Josh Sargent, ready for action after recovering from a foot injury. And we can't forget Haji Wright, another name in contention.
The competition for playing time is fierce, but that's exactly what raises the level of the team. Balogun wants to create momentum and increase his goal tally, and Pepi is determined to show that he too deserves a place in the spotlight. The next challenge against Panama will be crucial, especially as it means an early place in the quarter-finals, without having to rely on the tough encounter against Uruguay in the third round of group C.
