If you ask any fan of women's soccer who represents strength and resilience, the name of Ali Riley, another Angel City warrior, will surely be at the top of the list. The Football Ferns captain, with 162 caps for New Zealand, is the kind of player who not only defends with grit, but who inspires an entire generation on and off the pitch. However, even the most relentless forces have their limits, and Riley is facing what may be the toughest of all: a nerve injury that threatens to end her career.

During a talk in Los Angeles, Angel City player Riley revealed a secret she's been carrying around for the past few months - a silent battle against an injury that has not only taken her soccer away, but has taken her away from who she is. I couldn't walk, I couldn't run, and so even now, I don't know if I'll ever be able to play soccer again,” the captain vented. Her words are a reflection of a cruel reality that any athlete fears to face: the uncertainty of a comeback, the doubt about her own body, and the need to face a future without the passion that defined her life.

Riley, at 36, has faced everything in sport. She has participated in five World Cups and led her team with courage and determination. But now she finds herself in a position where her experience and leadership may not be enough to overcome the physical obstacle her body has imposed on her. Over the last seven months, Riley has tried everything: rehabilitation, injections, strength and conditioning treatments, but the pain persists. This nerve damage is an invisible adversary, an enemy that the captain can't dodge or defend against. She hasn't played for Angel City FC, and therefore the NWSL, since April.

The scariest thing is that, despite all her efforts, a full recovery seems a distant dream. In July, on social media, Riley was honest about her situation: “For the past seven months, I've been battling a nerve injury. It's been frustrating, confusing and terribly painful in a way that's hard to describe.” For someone who has always been an example of strength, admitting this vulnerability is a testament to how serious her condition is.

If Riley really is saying goodbye to the pitch, it will be a priceless loss not only for the Football Ferns, but for the whole of women's soccer. In a sport where women are still fighting for equality, the loss of a leader like Riley is a huge blow. She's not just a player, she's an icon, a voice that has always championed the cause of women's soccer, fighting both on and off the pitch.

But like any great leader, Riley has already started thinking about the future. “My identity goes far beyond what I can do on a soccer pitch,” she said. And it's this mentality that will keep her going, regardless of what the future holds for her career as an athlete. We may never see her on the pitch again, but her contribution to the sport is far from over. Ali Riley will continue to be a force to be reckoned with, whether as a player, a mentor or as an influential voice in the fight for fairer, more equal women's soccer.

Soccer is cruel, but it is also beautiful in its unpredictability. And if this really is the end of Riley's career, she says goodbye as a true champion, not just for the victories she has accumulated, but for the way she fought to the end. As she herself said, “I was formed by soccer, but I'm much more than that”.

So while women's soccer may be about to lose one of its biggest stars, Ali Riley's legacy will continue to shine through. Her impact goes beyond trophies and victories, it's on every young girl who, watching her play, believes she too can achieve the impossible.

If this is the last time we see Ali Riley on the pitch, may she be remembered not for the injury that took her off the pitch, but for the determination and courage with which she faced every challenge. She may be saying goodbye to soccer, but soccer will never say goodbye to Ali Riley.
