Records and Unbeatable Defense

Orlando Pride has shown why they are the team to beat this season. A new record for back-to-back clean sheets was set by the team a few weeks ago, while it is just a question of time before they equal the league record for most wins in one season. Having let in just 13 goals in 22 matches into the season, the solid defense of the squad, led by Carson Pickett and others, has controlled opponents with precision. That dominance has been reflected in a run of 554 minutes without conceding a goal, a record they broke in their last match.

But that is not all when it comes to the strength of Pride, as their attack has been one of the strong points of the team this season, with 40 goals. Barbra Banda, who has set fire to the league, has already netted 13 times and placed herself as one of the most fearsome forwards in the world. Not only is she second in the race for the Golden Boot, but also leading in game-winning goals-a proof that she is very important in crucial moments.

The real boost for Pride, however, may come from that extra motivation of sealing the NWSL Shield in front of their home crowd. Their last match drew a record crowd of 17,087, and that energy from passionate supporters could seal the difference against Spirit.

Breaking the Streak

Washington Spirit knows they have an uphill task before them. The challenge now will be to end a winless streak against Pride that stretches all the way back to 2021, a drought that includes three consecutive losses. Spirit boasts a powerful attack, with Ashley Hatch their key goal threat. Hatch, who's scored nine times against Pride in her career, is a constant danger and could be the key to turning the game in Washington's favor.

Spirit come fresh off the back of an important win over Angel City FC that has cemented them near the top of the table. Also, when able to open the scoring, the team has been all but unbeatable. On 15 wins this season, Washington are a single win away from tying Pride's record, adding further pressure on an already high-stakes matchup.

A Clash of Styles

Sunday's matchup between Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit pits two of the best in the league, statistically, against each other. Both teams rank in the top five in goals, assists and big chances created. But while Pride has built its season around an impenetrable defense, Spirit has been one of the best at finishing chances into the net.

This will indeed be a clashing of styles that makes for a somewhat unpredictable matchup. Pride's defense, which has conceded more than one goal only once this season, will be put to the test by an Spirit attack that has scored multiple goals in 15 matches this season. On the flip side, Banda and the Pride offense will have to break through a Spirit defense that's proven solid when it counts.
