This Sunday, New York City FC hosts Nashville SC in what could be a turning point in the race for Eastern Conference playoff positioning. While NYCFC aims to lock down a top-four spot, Nashville is fighting to keep their playoff aspirations alive. With big table implications, the showdown is thus expected to be a defining moment for both teams.

NYCFC: All Eyes on Fourth Place

The motivation is clear for NYCFC in this final stretch: lock up fourth place in the Eastern Conference. With his team a mere two points behind Orlando City SC, the Boys in Blue could pass the Lions with the right combination of results across the league this weekend. Sharp, without mental slip-ups that might blow up their playoff chase.".

Cushing did not mince words while asked about the importance of this match: "Fourth place is everything for us. Our mentality has to be on performing, on putting intensity into the game, and doing the things that have helped us win recently.

Interesting how the coach calls for a focus on their performance and not to worry about the opponents. He knows that mistakes at this stage of the season can be extremely costly. That's why NYCFC needs to take to the field with the same intensity and consistency that they've shown in the recent matches.

Nashville SC: Playoff Survival on the Line

On the other hand, Nashville comes into this match fighting desperately for a playoff spot. If three of the four teams above them in the table win this weekend, the hopes may be crushed in Nashville. This pressure for results makes the match against NYCFC even more critical since Nashville needs to win and hope for their competitors to stumble.

The biggest menace to Nashville comes through its two players who can change a game in just one moment: Hany Muktar and Sam Surridge. Cushing recognises the danger they bring: "Hany Muktar is very dangerous. Sam Surridge is a top forward. They have good players, and you have to be alert because in a moment they can kill you."

Nashville's Style Under New Management

The most interesting point, perhaps, was how Cushing underlined that the new coach has brought about a tactical change to Nashville: from an otherwise direct-playing team, relying heavily on set pieces, Nashville now tries to maintain possession of the ball and create chances through this avenue of attack. This makes the match even less predictable, since the team now couples talent with a much more modern and attacking style of play.

The changes don't fool Cushing, though, who knows Nashville can still be a threat: "They want to be a team that controls the game through possession, that creates chances, but they still have individuals who can kill you in a moment," the NYCFC coach noted.

NYCFC's Mentality: Win and Wait

NYCFC comes into this match on the back of some very convincing displays in recent rounds. It's pretty evident that, above actually winning, they have to hope their direct rivals stumble. Fourth place is there for the taking, and Cushing's team wants it bad. A huge question is, can NYCFC really put together a full 95-minute performance, one consistent with Cushing's frequent appeals?

Cushing emphasized that the performance level needed to stay high over the course of the match: "For us, it's about focus. It's about concentrating on why we're good and when we're good, and continuing to be consistent over 95 minutes," he said.

In a game with as much to play for from both teams, NYCFC needs to bring its A-game from first whistle to last.
