Courage's good campaign this season is a pointer to raw talents alone, but the determination of a hungry, youthful team into stardom. And the latest win with a record of 12 wins, 2 draws, and 9 losses further pulls that narrative, spearheaded by rising stars like Aline Gomes and Manaka Matsukubo, who played critical roles in securing the result.

Young Stars Shine and Lead Courage

Opening the scoring in the 32nd minute was the 18-year-old Aline Gomes, who scored her first-ever NWSL goal after a great high press up front, and she was as cool as a veteran to finish from close range. Young prospect Manaka Matsukubo was heavily involved; although the pass came off a San Diego defender, it was crucial in breaking the deadlock.

Towards the end of the first half, Manaka decided she would get in on the scoring herself. With a deflected cross from Ryan Williams, the young Japanese player headed with great precision as Courage took the lead to 2-0. It was a symbolic moment for Manaka as she returned to the club after starring for Japan in the U-20 World Cup, for which she earned the Silver Ball.

Solid in defense, good performance by Casey Murphy

Though key, Courage's attack shouldn't underestimate the final importance of the defense in this win. San Diego Wave pressed hard in the second half, most especially after their corner kick goal. Still, in those final minutes when they put on intense pressure, goalkeeper Casey Murphy made six crucial saves to ensure Courage held onto their lead.

The backline was also massive, with Kaleigh Kurtz standing like a wall in defence with eight crucial interventions-two of them in the dying moments of the game to ensure San Diego couldn't find the equalizer. These were part of the collective, solid, and defensive effort put in by the whole team to really lock it down when it counted.

Collective impact and midfield precision

Much of the consistency in Courage's victory was their interaction. Accurate passing, especially in midfield, allowed them several times to dominate the game. That is well-told by Narumi Miura, who had an astonishing 95% completion rate, finding her teammate 38 out of 40 times.

Another bright spark was Ryan Williams, who won nine out of ten duels-the most important for both defense and offense-while assisting Manaka to score for showing his versatility in different phases of the game.
