MLS legend Dax McCarty shocks the world by announcing retirement in emotional fashion
At 37, Dax McCarty, one of Major League Soccer's (MLS) most respected and beloved figures, has decided to hang up his boots. His announcement, delivered humbly and emotionally on social media, caught many off guard, but it’s a decision rooted in nearly two decades of dedication to the sport, with over 480 appearances now coming to an end. Currently donning the Atlanta United jersey, McCarty leaves behind a legacy that few can match.

“It’s been one hell of a journey, but it’s coming to an end,” McCarty said in his farewell video. With his trademark humility, he expressed gratitude to everyone who stood by him throughout his career. And indeed, the midfielder has plenty to be thankful for. From his early days at FC Dallas, where he was picked sixth overall in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft, to his brilliant stint with the New York Red Bulls, McCarty has always been a player who gave everything on the field.
His career is marked by achievements that many dream of but few accomplish. With 481 appearances, he ranks third in MLS history for most games played, surpassed only by Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando. Beyond the numbers, McCarty built a reputation as one of the best locker room leaders the league has ever seen. His ability to inspire and guide his teammates is something that goes beyond statistics, it's a true legacy of leadership.
At the New York Red Bulls, he probably experienced the peak of his career, where he won two Supporters' Shield titles in 2013 and 2015, solidifying his place as one of the league's best midfielders. There, he not only stood out on the field but also as a captain, a central figure in the locker room and a role model for others to follow. It was during this time that he was named to the MLS Best XI in 2015, and twice selected as an All-Star.
But Dax McCarty’s career isn’t just about the MLS. He also wore the U.S. Men's National Team jersey 13 times, participating in significant tournaments, including the victorious 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Even though his presence on the national team wasn’t as constant as in the MLS, McCarty always displayed the same grit and determination on the field — traits that have defined him over the years.
Now, with Atlanta United, he’s gearing up for the final matches of his career. Nine regular-season games remain, and the team still has a shot at making the playoffs. McCarty makes it clear that despite announcing his retirement, his desire to win remains unshaken. "I still have a burning desire to succeed this season, and I know our entire team does too," he stated.
And so, the MLS bids farewell to one of its greatest icons. Dax McCarty, with his dedication, leadership, and talent, leaves a void that will be hard to fill. For the fans, there’s a deep sense of gratitude for everything he’s done for American soccer. And for McCarty, the certainty that his story in the sport will be remembered for years to come. As he put it, "My cup is full," and without a doubt, he filled it with plenty of sweat, dedication, and love for the game.
When the final whistle blows at the end of this season and McCarty steps off the field for the last time, it will mark the end of an era in MLS. An era defined by the presence of a player who was more than just an athlete — he was a true example of character and professionalism. Dax McCarty, the tireless competitor, the natural leader, the man who played every minute like it was his last, now says goodbye. And American soccer, along with its fans, will never forget his name.
