Kansas City Current shines in dominant win, secures spot in NWSL playoffs
Kansas City Current punched their ticket to the 2024 NWSL playoffs in dominating fashion with a 3-0 win over Washington Spirit at CPKC Stadium. Precise attack, pace out wide, and an impenetrable backline underpinned the victory as Vlatko Andonovski's side firmly positioned itself as one of the best this season. It's not the result as much as it is the manner in which Kansas City reached here that's turning heads.

A Masterclass in Scoring
From the very first whistle, Kansas City meant business. Just four minutes into the game, Nichelle Prince found the net for the first time for the club, onto an emphatic display. Her goal made her the 18th different scorer for Kansas City in the NWSL regular season, extending a team record. Rarely does this happen in soccer, but such depth in attack has become key against any opponent for the Current.
The second came via Lo'eau LaBonta, as the midfielder let loose with a rocket from distance in the 31st minute. It wasn't just a brilliant individual effort but a reflection of the overall confidence and rhythm of the team. It marked the 16th career NWSL regular-season goal for LaBonta, one of the more important members of the squad.
Forward Temwa Chawinga sealed the scoring in the 69th minute of action to ensure that the home team dominated. With that goal, Chawinga solidified her position as one of the league leaders in goals this season with 16 goals. Her quest for the single-season scoring record in the NWSL will now be closely followed in the remaining matches.
Ironclad Defense: Almuth Schult and the Kansas City Wall
While the Current's offense made headlines, their defense stood just as tall. Keeper Almuth Schult posted her second consecutive shutout, highlighted by a crucial save on Leicy Santos' dangerous attempt-what looked like a sure-bottom-corner strike.
Kansas City's defense stifled Washington Spirit, making sure they were relegated to long-range shots and silencing the Spirit's offensive star in Trinity Rodman. It was a complete team effort that kept the Spirit at bay.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovski got it about right: "I'm happy with this, the players are happy with this, let's enjoy it. But as we always say-we'll celebrate and enjoy the moment staying humble in our success."
What's Next: The Playoff Push
Having secured their playoff spot, Kansas City's attention now shifts to a top-four finish that would secure a home game in the postseason. Off of eight straight wins at CPKC Stadium, playing in front of their home crowd could provide the difference-maker.
All this will be tested with five remaining regular-season games. Another storyline to be aware of is Temwa Chawinga's chase for the NWSL single-season scoring record. She currently sits on 16 goals-just two shy of making history.
