Moving on to the importance of a strong start

The first half gave clear signals that Gotham FC was ready to control the game from the first whistle. A penalty awarded just 8 minutes into the game saw Jenna Nighswonger keep her calm and open the scoring. Bay FC's handball in the box gave Gotham an opportunity that they did not hesitate to use. Nighswonger's precision and focus in converting the penalty showed that the team had a solid plan to suffocate their opponent early on.

Even so, Asisat Oshoala's equalizer for Bay FC in the 18th minute put some worry into the Gotham fans. For one brief moment, Gotham's control seemed threatened. A defensive slip-up allowed Oshoala to level the match and bring hope alive for the opposition. That could have thrown many teams off their balance-but not this time, Gotham.

What was striking, however, was how the team reacted. The team did not ever psyched themselves out. There was no panic, no disorganization. Gotham continued to press, patiently building their plays.

Five minutes of pure inspiration

The second half became a show as, in the 70th minute, Gotham took the lead again with an expertly crafted play between Ella Stevens and Rose Lavelle. Stevens was able to see and find Lavelle unmarked with great precision. The midfielder did not fail but planted a perfect header to put Gotham in front once again. An already important figure this season, Lavelle proved once more why she is an indispensable piece in the middle with great positioning and confident finishing.

From that moment on, Gotham didn't stop. Two minutes later, goal number three came via a set-piece. Always involved, Lavelle swung a cross in, which was nodded onto the head of Emily Sonnett, who looked up and picked out Esther, charging in to powerfully head it home. Quick-fire goals and precision were appealing sights as Gotham continued their surge and punished a growingly anxious Bay FC.

If that was not enough, Esther struck again only four minutes later as she scored the fourth goal with a poacher's instinct after the deflection in the box. At this stage, Bay FC seemed completely unsettled while Gotham seized every opportunity that came their way.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 84 minute when Lavelle was at it again, this time with a deflected shot at the feet of an unmarked Cece Kizer, who slotted calmly into the net for Gotham's fifth goal.

Praise to the depth of the squad and the decisions of Amorós

As is often the case, Coach Juan Carlos Amorós hit the nail on the head in his post-match comments: "Players committed, and the changes made an impact-Sam Hiatt came in, Mandy Freeman came in, Cece Kizer came in, and not only held the level of the team but changed the course of it.".

Amorós also acknowledged the challenge his team faced, coming back from an exhausting trip to Jamaica less than two days before the match: "This week was really tough for us. We came back from Jamaica less than 48 hours ago, and asking them to go out and compete against such a good team was a big ask. Bay FC is a great team.". They were able to put in a great team performance tonight. Of course, it was really hard to play against such a great Bay FC side. And I think our situation was that we hadn't been effective in front of goal, and today we were."
