FC Dallas' saga in the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup came to a painful and frustrating end with a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Sporting Kansas City. It was a game that tested the resilience, patience and determination of both teams, but in the end the hosts came out on top thanks to a decisive goal from Dany Rosero in the 111th minute.

A stoppage due to bad weather added an extra layer of tension to the match. When the game finally resumed, the energy was high and the anticipation in the air was palpable. However, extra time dealt Dallas a cruel blow. With minutes to go, Dany Rosero rose highest to head home a Johnny Russell corner, sealing the victory for Sporting Kansas City. It was a moment of pure emotion and frustration for Dallas, who saw their hopes crumble with that goal.

Interim coach Peter Luccin expressed his disappointment after the game: "This game hurts, because I felt we had a lot of chances to score, even in the final moments. Talking about the attitude of the players, I only have excellent things to say. In the end, the game is about scoring. We conceded a lot of goals and we always have to score three or four to win a game. Let's go home, get some rest and focus on the next challenge."

The frustration was palpable among the Dallas players. Tsiki Ntsabeleng summed up the team's feelings: "A bit of luck wasn't on our side. We showed good character to come back but, as I said, we needed a bit of luck to get the ball to the line and score the second and third goals."

Eugene Ansah, another of the team's standouts, reflected on the performance. For the striker, the team managed to play a good role, showing the difference between the US Open game and the MLS round.

"This was a better response to the last game we played here. It's frustrating not to get the result. For me personally, I think the team responded well. We need to focus on the details and just be strong. We need to do better in the next game."

Despite the defeat, there are many positives for FC Dallas to take away from this campaign. Reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open Cup for the 17th time since 1996 is a remarkable achievement and shows the team's consistency and ability in knockout competitions. However, the reality is that soccer is a game of results, and Dallas need to find ways of converting their good performances into consistent victories. The defense, in particular, needs to be more solid, avoiding the need to score multiple goals to make up for mistakes at the back.

Elimination from the US Open Cup is a blow, but also a learning opportunity. Coach Peter Luccin and his players must now refocus on the MLS, where there is still plenty to play for. With the season in full swing, every game becomes crucial, and Dallas must use the pain of this defeat as fuel to drive a turnaround in their ambitions.
